GORDO, ALA., Dec. 12.—(Special) —Editor, Peters, of the Gordo Mes senger has sent out a full statement as to the trouble between negroes and whites In Pickens county. He shows that the reports were vastly ex aggerated and that the rumored wholesale slaughter of whites and blacks was entirely In error. He says: ‘ -Last Friday night negroes went to the cotton house of Early I .owe and stole nearly a thousand pounds of seed cotton.. So many farmers have lost so much cotton that Mr. Lowe cut up small particles of paper and put In the cotton so It could be Identi fied. He went Saturday morning, af ter missing the cotton, to a gin own- ed and operated by negroes, and found his cotton. Later It was told him who carried the cotton there. A warrant was sworn out for a negro named Will Lowe, and put in the hands of R. v. Lowe and Robert Price to serve. They went and ar rested a negro and Btarted with him to Jaih When the prisoner began to call out loudly, ‘Mandolin,’ up rushed a hundred negroes, some with guns, and began shooting at Mr. Lowe, who had hold of the negro. He held to “ Prisoner until the negro was killed by thosa of his relatives and mends, who were shooting at the ofljeer. Three balls went Into the 4 n . e * ro - J? 1 * Mr- l«we sa>'s the bullet that killed the negro was fired by the negro's brother. “Several small shot hit Mr. Lowe in the face and legs, but not sufficient to cause much pain. •'When the negroes discovered that they had killed one of their own number, they ran off. “This occurred Sunday afternoon near sun down. Monday morning, about 500 men, with the sheriff, went Into lx>we Town, where only negroes live, and where the negro was killed, and be gan a thorough search' of the plaee for the criminals. About thirty have been arrested and put In Jail at Car rollton. “No one was killed except the negro prisoner. “For many years Lowe Town hdk been obnoxious to law-abiding cltl sens. Thieving, and robbery occur (rcquently and when the negroes once get back to Lowe Town they are safe. One negro who had no crop, had sold thirteen bales of cotton and, of course, It wns stolen. "They nil belong to secret- socie ties, and the word ‘mandolin’ was their pass word of. distress. Their lodge was burned and a com plete rout of the negroes effected. The whltp people are detrmlned not to let them again build up Lowe Town .Everything Is quiet here.” Mr. and Mrs. William Park Wallis have sent out handsomely engraved Invitations to their crystal wedding, which happy occasion will be cele brated on Friday evening, 20th, at eight o'clock, at their residence Forrest street The event is pleas antly anticipated by the many friends of Col. and Mrs. Wallis who will as semble at their hospitable home And extend congratulations upon their fifteenth marriage anniversary, and wish for them the pleasure of cele brating the golden and diamond an niversaries as well.
