Americus Gets Supply By

In Americus yesterday was a well
known Macoulan, who, while hope
ful of an early return of better busi
ness conditions related instances
which emphasised the effect of 1 the
depression brought about by the re
cent financial stringency and the hos
tility towards railways in the state,
in the Macon yards of the Central, he
said, were, a large number of freight
locomotives entirely out, of service,
as they have been for weeks past.
Decreased business, as the result of
legislative and administrative at
tacks, together with conditions gen
erally. had put these engines and
crews out of business. The locomoti
ves are painted whitS to prevent rust
ing, and there they stand, pulseless,
grlnt evidences of adverse conditions
In Georgia. A year ago, there were
not enough engines available to han
dle the enormous freight traffic on the
Central, but conditions are sadly
changed now.

the earlier period of Its oopulnrlty have
"gone by the board” and are never more

this long-time popularity and that Is to
be found in its superior merits. When
once given a fair trial for weak stomach,
or for liver and blood affections, its # supe-

The Americus express office is
rapidly assuming Its quondam ap
pearance when, during former prohi
bition days, our cougtt drops came
by express from Macon, Oglethorpe,
Albany and points beyond the Geor
gia line.
A little must be had for “medicinal
use" and it Is coming In.
For. whereas a battleship could
have been floated three weeks ago
In the liquor held In Americus, It
Is gone now, even the “reserve stock’
seeming to have vanished.
Hundreds of people here put away
quantities from a quart to a case
or barrel, but only the barrel buyer
seems to have any left, while al
ready the man behind the one quart
proposition Is putting In his mall
orders. , „
And the snake extract arrives dally
by every train.
It Is said that $40 to $50 Is sent
from Americus every day to one
mall order house in a distant city
And there are others.
And the mall order business will
Increase rapidly every day as the
reserve stock put aside before the
saloons closed diminishes. It Is easy
to place an order here by the noon
mall and have a Jug delivered next
morning.
Or if not a plain Jug. a “box of
bhoks," which sometimes leaks.
Within three or four months the
shipping business will have assumed
huge proportions and the t express
company’s employes will work over
time here as elsewhere!
But Americus will buy hers legiti
mately, and in the open market where
it is sold. She will not tolerate blind
tigers, and as evidence of this truth
Chief Feagin stated yesterday that
there was no evidence of one here
Perhaps, sooned or later, people will
learn to do without it. Certain^ 1s
is, that with the temptation removed
there is far less drinking here today
than heretofore.

DEAD AT NINETY YEARS
WOMAN HAS A HISTORY
Americus lady Thrice
Widow Dies.
Ninety years old, the widow of
three husbands, the progenitrix of a
family of eleven children and two
grand children, Mrs. Eliza Anne Un
derwood died at a hospital In Mont
gomery believing that nowhere In
the Hide world did any one bear the
name of her or any of her husbands.
Born and reared here In Sumter
county near Americus, Mrs. Under
wood did not know of a relative or
earth who bore either of her names—
'hose of her three deceased hus
bands.
Seventy years ago she removed to
Alabama and has since lived there.
Mrs. Underwood was born In Sum
ter county# July 18, 1818, and when
she was about twenty years old she
was married to the late Wiley Hullan,
of Greenville.
Only one of these children, Rebecca
Hulan, attained maturity and was
married j She became the wife of w.
T. McCutcheon, and two children were
born to them. « . .
Afterwards Mrs. Hulan married
Newton Cooper, and after his death
she was wedded to Frank Underwood,
who died in 1872. Mr. Cooper and
Mr. Underwood, who served In the
Confederate army, were citizens of
Montgomery. . , „„
A remarkable feature of Mrs.
Underwood’s death was her repeated
fear of being buried while she was
still alive, and this dread, spoken In
the form of a dying request, Is the
cause of the naming of Friday as the
day of her funeral. . , ,
As her deathbed request the funeral
Is delayed until today./

zens of Americus, or of the c° u J^y.

In a recent Issue of the Savannah
Morning News has the following to
say of the Americus Institution:
“If anything was needed to show
the favor in which the district agri
cultural colleges are held' by the
people of Georgia, and the prosperity
that will be theirs as soon as they
have got Into working order, the evi
dences would be afforded in the re
ports that come to us from Americus.
The Third district college has hardly
more than opened Its doors, yet the
enrollment of pupils is beyond the
capacity of the establishment. That
means that boys of the dlstrlcc who
desire to secure practical agricultural
educations must actually be turned
away because there is no room for
them. Every country In ttye district
is represented In the student body. If
the capacity of the school could be
doubled we have no doubt that all
of the room would be quickly taken.
These district schools are going to
have a tremendous and beneficial in
fluence upon the development of the
agricultural resources of the state
Each of the eleven schools will doubt'
less start off with every pupil that
It can take In.”
