SALES OF GUANO NOT
LARGE AS LAST TEAR
In Opinion oT Fertilizer
Dealers.
Americus, as a distributing point
lor commercial fertilizer, is not hand-
1(PE the volume of trade she had last
season, to judge by the number of
wagons hauling the stuff to the coun
try. And this story is repeated. In
other towns of the state, evidencing
a decreased cotton acreage. Basing
■their opinion on the short sales of
fertilizers as reported by the State
Department of Agriculture, fertilizer
men generally state in their opinion
the Georgia cotton acreage will be
reduced this year from 15 to 20 per
cent. They further express the be
lief that there will be a proportionate
reduction in the amount of cotton to
be planted in other sections of the
South.

NO DELAY IN SETTLING
CLAIMS BY ROADS
Shippers Get Prompt. At
tention Now.
Shippers in many sections of the
state have noted a remarkable prompt
ness on the part of the railroads in
settling claims passed on by the
Railroad Commission which have ac
crued since Aug. 22, 1907, when the
new Railroad Commission law be
came effective. The new Railroad
Commission has adopted the policy
of issuing an order directing the pay
ment of ail approved claims, and
failure on the part of a railroad com
pany to comply with such order would
subject It to the danger of the penalty
of $500 for each day that it refused
obedience. The railroads are not
anxious to experiment with this
accumulative penalty feature of the
new law, and It Is believed they will
fight shy of it until the last ditch.
