The boys and glrU of the Americus High School are looking forward with great interest to the* contests that are to be held at Hawkinsville in April, when they will contest with the pu pils of other schools of the Third Con gressional District for prizes offered in declamation, music, handicraft, es say writing and track athletics. This will be the first contest to be held under the District High School Association, recently organized. Supt. Miller of the Americus schools, is president and Supt. Polhiil, of Haw kinsville is secretary of the Associa tion. The meeting will-be held on Fri day, April 17. How many puplW yvlll enter the contests from Americus is not known. It is quite probable that there will be competitive tests locally to select representatives to bring back prizes to Americus. The following statement is made as to the purposes of the High School Association: “The object of the association shall be to promote the cause of education through (he establishment and ade quate maintenance and equipment of public high schools in every county as a necessity In any modern system of education and an efficient measure of linking the elementary public schools with the colleges and unlver slties and of Improving the scholar ship of the rank and file bf public school teachers and the intelligence and efficiency of the entire citizenship of the district. "The teachers and officers 6f every high school in the district together with the county school commissioners of the several counties composing the district, will be invited to membership in .he association "Conference for the discussion of high school problems will be held from time to time." SEASON OF HUNTING IS COMING TO A CLOSE Hunters Are Fast Depleting the Birds. Americus gunners are aware of the fact that the season of quail shooting is rapidly drawing to a close, and will make the best of the three weeks re maining. Thousands of partridges and doves have been killed during the season in south Georgia, and the wholesale slaughter of doves in bait-, ed fields continues, several “shoota” being arranged for this week on farms near Americus. At the present rate of extermination partridges and doves will soon be killed off entirely. A few years ago these birds were plentiful In the territory around Americus, but I thousands have been killed every year and they are now so scarce that the) fear is generally expreseed' by the* sportsmen that unless steps are taken to put a curb on the zeal of hunters a practical extinction of the favorite game birds of Georgia will sooq re- . suit, so far as this section is concern ed ...J Specitl Values in Boys’ and Youths’ Shoes.
