Contracts aggregating more than one hundred thousand dollars and
covering the greater poition of machinery and equipment for the big power
plant of the Americus Railway & Light Co., were finally closed yesterday
by President A. N. Walker, for the Company.
AH equipment thus grdered must be delivered in Amertaui. within sixty
days, under the terms of each contract.
Lands upon which the requisite buildings will be erected have been
obtained. These lands are owned by the Central of GeorglaRallway, and
are secured by lease for a period of forty years.
The land lies Immediately alongside the city's waterwork’s station, and
contiguous to the railroad.
Contracts were also awarded the Standard Brick Co., of Macon, for
three hundred thousand brick for immediate delivery, these to be used In
the construction of the power plant. ,
This great and modern building will be entirely completed within sixty
days and made ready for the installation of electrical machinery, pumpB,
boilers and other equipment which will have arrived In Americus by that
date or before.
The plant, will meet the requirements of a city of 50,000 Inhabitants, or
four times the size of Americus. But the company has an eye to the city’s
rapid growth and development, and Is not building alone tor the present.
No city in the South will have a more modern or better equipped plant
than will Americus.
The contracts given yesterday Include two great steam turbines, with
Westinghouse turbo-generators. These Immense Westlnghouse machines
are in duplicate, each of 550 horse power. They have an actual speed of
3.600 revolutions ner minute actual test.
Condensing Co.,, cf Cataret, N. J.
Huge boilers, a most important feature of such a plant, have been
bought from the Casey & Hedges Co., of Chattanooga . These are of the
latest type of holler, and are ordered in duplicate. Each Is of 500 horse
l-ower, equipped with super-heaters.
“Americus will have a modern and up-to-date street lighting system,”
said President Walker, while discussing the award of contracts with the
Tlmes-Becorder representative. ' “All equipment will be supplied by the
General Electric Co., of Schenectady, N. Y.”
And the feature that Interests Americus more, perhaps, than any other
is being cared for as well In the placing of orders for equipment This is
the electric street railway, which the company has contracted .to construct
and operate os well.
"You may state that, the railway equipment will be the very best,” said
Col. W. A. Dodson, who has done so much to secure this magnificent In
vestment for Americus. And President Walker gave endorsement to Col.
Dodson's pleasing statement.
“Handsome steel cars, as pretty as any operated upon Atlanta’s streets,
will be bought for the Americus railway.” And the genial Colonel fairly
beamed as he told the pleasing story. The big motor generator for the
system was also ordered yesterday.
And this is the pleading story the Tlmes-Becorder promised a week
ago would be told when contracts were awarded. It has been as good as
!t3 word, and Americus can now felicitate In the acquirement of this really
magnificent Investment. ’ 11
To get the best, one must "make haste slowly” and Americus has
profited In this particular. And with the breaking of dirt within another
>., e ek, her long-cherished dream will very soon be realized.
Vuginia-Carolina
Fertilizers
Is there ally reason why you cannot do just as well as Mr.
yv James M. Swlnt, of Chlpley, Ga., who used 600 lbs. per
acre of VIrginia-Carolina Fertilizers on hiscotton crop?
. He gathered one and a half bales of cotton per
jsSy acre, and there were more bolls yet to open.'
Wjf This is the experience of hundreds of other cotton
planters. Careful preparation of your soil,’and liberal
liu
use of high grade Virginia-Carolina Fertilizers will
surely “increase your yields per acre.” Numerous un.
prejudiced authorities tell how it Is done in the new
Virginia-Carolina Fanners’ Year Book or Almanac,
a copy of which maybe secured from your fertil
izer dealer, or from our nearest sales-office. -
An interesting picture of Mr. Swint’s
cotton will be found in this Year Book.

LETTER TO WARE ORCHARD
Americus, Georgia
The .wear of paint goes
less gallons paint
Dear Sir:
by gallons; the
wears longest. The reason, of course
Is Its strength. It takes less gal
lons, because It Is strong; it wears
a long time, because It is strong. It
Is all paint and the strongest pqtnt.
There is a best paint among all-
paint paints. No two are alike, of
course; no two cover alike or wear
alike. One Is thin, another is thick;
one has too much lead, another too
much zinc, another Is right. The
right Is Devoe, so far as Is yet known.
Perhaps somebody else will find out
a better paint than Devoe; then De
voe will becomJ a more-gallons paint,
costlier jjalnt, a weaker paint, a
less-durable paint, a less-economical
paint, a timid paint.
Bigger changes than that have
come over the world. Devoe has the
lead; why shouldn't we lose It to
somebody else?
Yours truly,
54 F. W. DEVOE & CO.
