swollen and tender, the muscles and joints throb and jerk, and the body
is literally racked with pain. Plasters, blisters, liniments, etc., can never
cure the disease; they relieve the pain, per

HURRIED HOME TO ! CLARK IS JAILED UPON
WARN NEGROES CHARGE Of VAGRANCY
Rev. 6.0.Crittendon, Back
From California.
Hurrying back to Americus in or
der that he might warn members of
his race from starting on a wild goose
chase to California, G. C. Crlttendon, a
colored preacher, reached Americus
yesterday. This afternoon he will go
to LesHe and speak to the negroes to
warn them against being fooled into
giving up their home in Sumter coun
ty and trying their fortune In the
Golden West, of which such roseate
pictures have been dangled' before
their eyes by immigration agents.
Sunday afternoon Rev. Crlttendon
will speak in a DeSoto church on the
same topic.
At the first of each month- the
railroads give very low one-way rates
to California. It is safe to predict that
those who hear the statements of the
colored preacher will decide to remain
at home, where they can at least
make a good living. >
G. C. Crlttendon left Americus short
ly before Christmas. When he ar
rived in I-os Angeles he found
number of Georgia colored people
there, most of them out of work. Not
only were the negroes out of work,
but white men, Mexicans and Japa
nese were likewise idle, the total of
unemployed In the city being placed
at 23,000 men. Women of all nation
alities were walking the streets wring
ing their hands and weeping.'
Sumter Negroes Hungry
Many of the negroes from- Sum
ter county are in actual need of the
necessities of life. When he first
went there Crlttendon started a little
restaurant. He fed many of the Sum
ter county negroes free of charge be
cause they did not have anything to
pay with. This generosity soon ren
dered the restaurant business very
unprofitable and be could not afford
to keep It open. One negro parted
with a gold chain, with a locket orn
amented with a small diamond In or
der that he could get something to eat.
Others brought old clothes to the res
taurant, which soon resembled a
junk shop.
City Soup Houses.
So severe has the situation become
In Los Angeles tbat the city baa open
ed soup houses where three meals a
day are given for five cents, but even
at this many white and colored peo
ple were not able to patronize these
soup kitchens.

Other Charges Are Named
as Well
J. J. Clark, a white man who has
been living in Americus for some
time, is now in the county Jail under
a warrant charging vagrancy and
adultery, wiiiie It is probable that the
charge of abandonment of minor
children will be preferred against
him as well. Clark's four little child
ren, it will be recalled, were found
here In need and distress, it was
said, quite recently and sent to the
Mumford Home in Macon. Kind-heart
ed citizens took charge of the poor lit
tle ones, thus found alone, and raised
a fund of $53 for their benefit. The
four, among them a girl of twelve or
thirteen years, are now in the Indus
trial Home in Macon, where they are
well cared for. Clark was jailed up
on a warrant Issued by Justice J. I.
Hudson.
