subject to the Democratic primary on
the 15th day of April 1908. I May®
faithfully and to the best of my ability
discharged the duties of the office,
filling an unexpired term for which
you Kindly elected me. I have lived
in, and been a citizen of Sumter coun
ty forty-three years. The best part
of my life has been devoted to the
upbuilding and Improvement of the
county, for which I have never asked
or expected compensation. 0“ a ®*
count of the manner In which the dut
ies of the office have been performed
since I have been ordinary, and be
cause I now need the emoluments
thereof; I earnestly Bollcit an endorse
ment at your. hands by an election
for a full term. BgjgeMUg
I announce my candidacy for
election as solicitor of the City Court
of Americus, subject to thi action of
the Democratic primary on April 15th.
I have filled the unexpired term of
my predecessor, and I trust that my
administration of the duties of this
important office fully merits the con
fidence of the white voters of Sumter,
at whose hands I ask indorsement by
re-election to a full term. I will

The annual banquet to be given
by the Board of Trade will be In
charge of the Women’s 'Auxiliary of
the -^merlcus Hospital Association.
This announcement was made yes
terday by Chairman T. E. Mitchell, of
the entertainment committee.
Thus not only will be the Interests
of the Board of Trade be furthered
by the banquet, but the profits will
go towards a most worthy object.
It has been arranged that the ban
quet will be held on the third boor
of the city hall. Tickets will be ?I
a plate. Both ladies and gentlemen
will he seated around the banquet
board, the occasion being a social
event. The Council chamber will be
used as a reception room, so that the
guests will have a pleasant place to
wait the announcement from the din
ing hall. The date has not yet been
fixed, but it will be early In April.
It Is a certainty that a number of
outside speakers will bo present,
though nothing definite has been done.
When the date of the event is an
nounced will be time enough to com
municate with the speakers.
At the banquet last year there
were 125 .guests. At the coming event
it is expected that the number will
be much larger. In a few days the
committee will canvass the city to
see how many will agree to buy tick
ets. This will also enable the ladies
to get an idea of the number for
whom provision must be made. It
Is expected that every citizen who
has the interests of Americus at
heart will take a ticket. The larger
the attendance the greater the en
thusiasm.
In addition to this, the committee
having the sale of tickets in charge
will have the added argument this
year that the hospital association will
also be a beneficiary. The fact that
the Auxiliary has the spread in charge
is also a surety that the feast will
be worth while.
The officers of the Auxiliary are:
President Mrs. P. C. Clegg; vice-
presidents, Mrs. Frank Harrold, Mrs.
C. C. Hawkins; secretary Mrs. Rob
ert Maynard.

June 4th Is the date of the Congres
sional primary In the Third district—
the same date as that of the State
primary. Such was the decision of
the Third district democratic execu
tive committee assembled yesterday at
Fort Valley and attended by represen
tatives from all- of the fifteen counties
of-the district. Little else was done
beyond fixing the date and prescribing
rules therefor. It will require a ma
jority vote of the district to nominate.
The meeting Friday was brief, the
Americus representatives returning
here by the 2 p. m. Central train. Both
Congressman E. B. Lewis and his op
ponent, Col. Dudley M. Hughes, will
irobably make a canvass of the fif
teen counties of the Third between
this date and that of the primary.
June 4th, although Mr. Lewis Is very
busily engaged at his duties in Wash
ington at this time.
