Judging by the number and value
of the money orders sent from ..the
local postofflee during the first quar
ter of the present year, as compared
with the same period of last year, that
branch of the office is on a boom.
The fact that prohibition went into
effect on January 1st explains in
some measure the gain of over 50 per
cent In the value of the money orders
for the quarter, compared with the
same period of 1907, though undoubt
edly a good share of the increase is
due to the growth of the city and
its commercial interests. To this
amount must be added the needs of
bibulous individuals for that which
It Is unlawful to sell in Georgia.
The number of money orders issued
by the Americus postofflee for tha
first three months of 1908 were 3938,
with a value of $21,667.28, while for
the same three months of last year
the figures were 2,550 money orders
of a value of $14,700.95.*
This is a gain in orders of 1382
and in value of $7,966.33.
Exclusive of the money order de
partment, the receipts of the Americus
postofflee for the twelve months end
ing March 31, 1908, were $17,679.12,
compared with receipts of $16,-
477.70 for the same period a year ago,
and Increase of $1,201.42, or about
8 per cent. Considering the fact
that many of the larger offices have
actually lost in receipts for the same
period, the increase, though small,
is notable.

Americus will be eating luscious,
ripe peaches in a little while now, and
from her abundance of this delicious
fruit will ship probably two hundred
carloads to sections less fortunate.
Mr. R. S. Broadhurst brought in from
his orchard of 25,000 trees, yester
day, several limbs broken from trees
and covered with fruit as large as
guinea eggs—in fact, about one
fifth grown. Already there is a
tinge of red upon the cheeks of the
peaches which will spread Into a
crimson blush ere they ripen during
the first Jurii week. The fruit is
perfect in formation and the only
difficulty presented is the abnormal
quantity, the trees being loaded be
yond their capacity. All of the large
orchards here are In prime condition
and the peach crop this year will
be simply Immense—the largest by
far ever grown in" the Americus
fruit district.
