BIG OUTPUT OF FRUIT
AS “MADE IN AMERIGUS"
HALF MILLION CANS PEACHES FUT UP ALREADY BY THE CANNERY
HERE. AND 1HE TOTAL OUTPUT FOR THE PACKING SEASON
MAY REACH THE MILLION CANS MARK. A VALUABLE ENTER
PRISE FOR AMERICUS.
A round half million'cans of ex
cellent peaches bearing The label
“made in Americus,” have already
been turned out of the large cannery
of Roberts Bros, here, and ere the
season closes the million mark will
have been reached. .
A million cans of peaches; and
“made in Americus.”
Into every state in the Union this
product of an Americus factory will
find Its way, for the fruit put up by
this wellknown house is a staple ev
erywhere.
The plant has had for the past week
the heaviest business of the packing
season, and the average dally output
has largely exceeded 20.000 cans. A
great force Is employed there,.and the
supply of fruit offered has been am
ple.
In fact, it would probably tax the
plant to handle all of the fruit avail
able at this time.
The crop here has been enormous,
as Is generally known, and the plant
Is now getting as many good peaches
as required.
The Process of Packing.
The process of packing the fruit,
which has been minutely described in
the Tlmes-Recorder, is most interest
ing, and many people here have gone
to the cannery since operations were
begun there to. watch how deftly It Is
done.
The raw fruit is lifted from one
car In the yard, and within an hour’s
time it is canned and labeled, and
ready for loading into another,, If de
sired.
The process of canning is quickly
but thoroughly done.
For among the 150 people employ
ed there are no idlers. Every one
works, including father.
Cleanliness next to efficiency is a
rule there and the fruit as It Is put in
to the two and three pound cans for
boiling Is most appetizing. The line
Elbertas are cut into halves, the fur
removed, and then It is ready for the
can.
Fruit Roiled When Canned.
The cans, neatly soldered, are then
put Into great iron baskets, 250 at
the time, and lowered Into a caldron
of hot water. There the fruit Is heat
ed sufficiently.
After being cooled In another vat
of water the cans are sent to the pack
ing house where the attractive labels
are put on. Packed In cases of two
dozen, the cases also bearing the
Americus legend, the fruit Is ready
for shipment.
The factory puts up several grades
of canned peaches, all*of them stan
dard brands.
With a half million eanB put up al
ready, and the season just at its
height, the Americus cannery will
have done an excellent business at
the close.
And the enterprise Is- a good one
for the city in many ways.
Payroll is a Large One.
Thousands of dollars have been dis
tributed already In the weekly pay
rolls, and other thousands still will
thus be distributed in Americus. All
ot this currency finds its way at once
into the channels of trade. Little of
it is hoarded.
The company employs about 150
operatives at good wages, and a bus
ier set of tollers one will not see any
where.
Aside from the weekly payrolls, and
the advertisement given Americus by
“the label on the can,” the enterprise
has supplied a fine market for thous
ands of bushels of peaches, that
might not have been utilized.
The entire crops of several orchards
near Americus have gone to the can
ning factory, to the great advantage
of the growers.
SPANKITORIUM FOR
SMALL OFFENDERS
Judge Suggests and Moth
er Acts.
NEW YORK, July 4.—(Special) , - . „ , ,
Spankitorium No. 1 became an late- maner In which the pendulum
gral part of the children's court to- their subsequent action can
day. Judge Olmsted, who Invented unless they pay a fine,
this new branch of special sessions,
ordered it shifted from an obscure
corner of a hallway to a room of
its own, and gave directions that it
should be adorned In becoming style.
Two smart tables were moved into
it and several study chairs capa
ble of withstanding any strain were
placed in stategic points.
Light and airy is Spankitorium No.
1. Its ceiling Is high and Its dimen
sions, which are 15 by 20 feet, give
abundant space for maneuvering-.
Plain to the point of severity arc Its
furnishings, and not even the furni
ture is padded. In one corner I a a
square top desk, while the central
ornament is a long, shiny table. There
are straps and rulers lurking about,
but they are deftly concealed until
the time arrives for putting them In
to commission.
Able Epstein was the first offen
der to test the new spankitorium. He
had been caught by a policeman at
a moving picture show with his fin
gers, which are very light, in sus
picious proximity to the pockets of
several frequenters of the place.
The policeman who apprehended
Able was not prepared to prove

Cough Caution
Among the many noteworthy achievements
of Kentuckians the distilling of the finest and
rarest whiskies stands out preeminent. Few of

carry her manifold virtues broadcast than has
her renowned whiskies, the most splendid alco
holic derivative of grain produced since its dis
