17TH DISTRICT.
Plains, Nov. 4.—A delightful social
event of the past week was the Hal
lowe’en party given at the Auditorium
Saturday evening by Misses Annie
Collum and Ophle Markett, compli
mentary to their pupils. The spirit of
the season was observed throughout
the entertainment. The witch, for
tune teller and ghosts made them
selves manifest. The usual Interest
ing games were Indulged In by the
young folks. At a late hour delic
ious punch and all kinds of fruit were
served.
The fourth quarterly meeting of
the Plains Charge convened with the
Plains church on the 31st Inst, to
complete the work of the charge for
the present conference year before
the meeting of the annual conference.
There was a very good attendance of
the Stewarts, and the meeting proved
quite an interesting and profitable
one. Rev. J. B, Johnston, the Presid
ing Elder, preached three able, soul-

Last Friday morning, Mr. Chas. L.
Ansley inaugurated his special sale of
high-class dry goods, clothing, and
ladles ready-to-wear garments. In
their eagerness to get inside the
store on the first day customers push
ed open the doors before the time an
nounced for the sale to begin, and
seized upon the goods almost by
force. Crowds surged over the store,
and in many instances buyers carried
goods in one hand and cash in the
other to the cashier, being unable to
get waited on, though a large force of
extra clerks had been employed.
From that day on the rush has been
going on every day. Every day stran
gers passing by have asked what was
creating bo much excitement inside
the store.
Mr. Ansley Is keeping up the big
cuts in prices, being determined to
close out many lines, and continue, It
at all. In specialties.

BOULEVARD
De Soto, Ga., Nov. 4.—The convict
camp of Sumter county Is now sta
tioned In the vicinity of De Soto for
the purpose of opening a public road
between De Soto and Cobb. The lo
cation of the road will pass through
the most beautiful portion of the
Rylander-Sheffleld plantation and will
place In public view the recently ex
tensive Improvements they have made
on that portion of the farm, which
consists of 17 new dwellings, etc. Al
ready more than a mile of the road
has been completed and the work re
flects credit upon Supt. Christian's
excellent management of the convicts.
The entire distance of the road will
be four miles and when completed
entirely will not only make an addi
tional attraction to De Soto, but also
for the citizens of the eastern portion
of Sumter county. The automobillsts
of Amerieus are cordially invited to
come down and try the speed of
their cars on De Soto's beautiful
boulevard.

STEWART IS FREED ON
CHARGE OF HOMICIDE
Commissioner T. G. Hudson will
leave Amerieus on Monday next to
attend the great convention of farm
ers and business men to assemble in
New Orleans next Tuesday. The re
tirement from the market of 1,600,000
bales of cotton is one of the plans to
be considered at the conference of
farmers and business men, according
to President C. S.t Barrett of the Nat
ional Farmers’ Union, who called the
meeting. Mr. Barrett returned from
the Crescent City 8unday. He made
complete arrangements for the gath
ering, which he says will be the lar
gest of that kind that has ever taken
place in this country. The confer
ence will be between representative
farmers and business men from all
sections of the cotton belt, and will
be for the purpose of devising plans
to advance the price ot cotton. It
will be held under the auspices or
the Farmers' Union.

ert McCrary at his home in Macon, the
end following an illness of some length

Tom Stewart, the negro who gave
Arthur Harris a punctured tire by
shooting him through the heart here
three or four weeks ago, surrendered-,
himself to Sheriff Bell yesterday and
upon preliminary trial was at once
liberated.
A clear case of self-defense was
readily established.
Only one witness was examined, -
the negress, Tess Ray, at whose
house the tragedy occurred, and her
statement served to liberate the prls—
oner, Tom Stewart
The woman stated that Harris came
to her home on the night in question
and, finding Stewart a previous guest
rushed upon him with Ills hand on his
pocket, threatening to kill him. It
Was then .that Stewart’s hardware '
was brought into .full play.
One bullet put Harris to the bad, ).'
and Stewart, who Is only a country '
negro, took to his heels.

acter, but the plea of self-defense was
