FIRE REfOKI* IS GOING
TO SHOW I P WELL
Americas is Still Enjoying Immunity
Ten months without a blaze of any
consequence. Is the splendid Are rec
ord enjoyed by Americus, and the
hope that good fortune will continue
on is fervently expressed. Few cities
the size of Americus are so blessed
in this way.
Not since February 5th has there
been a fire of consequence here, and
that one figured a loss of probably
$750 only.
Of course there have been numer
ous small fires that might have
LEGAL ADVERTISEMENTS
APPLICATION FOB CHARTER.
The fall session of Srfmter super-
tor court was convened Monday morn
ing, With Judge Z. A. Littlejohn pre
siding. Jurors were promptly in at

putting in motion the judicial mach
inery and beginning of trial of cases
that appear on the civil docket.
The grand jury was organized and

lent citizens, with Mr. Thomas J.
Black as foreman.
Judge Littlejohn's — charge was
clear, concise and forcible, as it is at
all times. «
He dwelt especially upon the im
portance of good roads throughout
tbd county and at much length Im
pressed these views upon the grand
jury. He also dwelt upon the sale of
liquors to minors as an evil to be
guarded against.
The pistol-carrying habit, and the
operation of blind tigers were fully
dwelt upon, as were other like
crimes committed here.
The grand Jury Is composed of the
following named citizens;
T. J. Black, G. W. Montgomery, S.
J. Jordan, F. A. 'Wilson. J. F. Daniel,

resulted seriously but for efficient
work of the department, but there
is where the secret lies.
In the dozen or more Incipient
blazes the loss’ sustained did not ex
ceed $10, or *25 at the most. The de
partment is always there promptly,
the situation is well handled, and the
insurance companies sustain little
loss.
The burning of the compress the
first of the year was a serious loss,
it Is true, but that was unavoidable.
A cotton fire is the most difficult of
all fires to cope with, and a dozen
departments could not have extin
guished it.
The Americus department. Is In
fire trim, and hopes to get through
the year with out another serious
blaze.
XO WORSE I XAMEHICUS
THAN OTHER TOWNS
Has Spread in
Places.
COMES TO PRISON SITE
TO LOCATE SHAFT
Another magnificent, state monu
ment, that of Illinois, Is to be added
to the forest of marble shafts that
adorn the old prison grounds at An-
dersonvllle, near Americus. A com
mission of Illinois state officers came
to Andersonvllle yesterday for the
purpose of selecting the monument
location. The commission is com
posed of the following: Hon. Aaron
M. McCracken, president, Chicago,
III., Hon. Gilbert J. George, vice
president, Springfield, Ill., Hon. Lewis
F. I-ake, secretary. Rockford, Ill ;
Honj William H. Mainline, Macambs,
Ill.; Hon. James M. Swales, Jack
sonville, Ill.'
It Is no worse in Americus than
in other towns. The sale craze has
spread to other localities as, well
and each town is striving to “Out-
Herod Herod,” in putting on special
sales in almost all lines of trade.”
This was the view of an Americus
business man returning here yester
day from a trip to Columbus.
Like Americus, he says, Columbus
is a veritable “city of banners.” Store
front are placarded with “special
sale" announcements for a half mile.
Many of the largest stores, he says
have put on "sales*’ and the whacking
of prices goes on merrily. And the
same may be said of other cities in
the state. Everywhere there Is a
frantic desire to turn loose.
Americus has had, and Is still hav
ing, a carnival of trade cutting such
as never before known here, but the
same Is true of other towns here
about.

DYNAMO IX PLACE FOB
PLANT AT WELL’S MILL
No goods sblppMlC.aD.
FURS! FURS! FURS!
One c th largc-c: stocks in Georgia
outside or the big cities. Prices are so
moderate they will surprise you.
Even Smlthvllle has got Americus
sklpned to a finish on its electric
lighting plant, and will be in a blaze
of glory while we still grope In near
darkness. Mr. J. S. Stevens of Am
ericus, finished yesterday placing the
dynamo In the power plant at Wells
Mill, two miles from Smlthvllle, and
it is expected that the lights can be
turned on shortly. Wells Mill, the
great fishing resort, will afford abun
dant water power, and Smlthvllle will
be given a steady, / continuous light
and probably a day current as well,
at nominal cost to consumers. Smlth
vllle Is to be congratulated at thus
beating the bigger towns on the light
proposition.
Some changes have been made by
the state book commission in the text
books to be used In the common
schools. Among the books retained
are: Wentworth’s practical Arithme
tic; Hyde's first course in English;
Frye's Geographries: Hutchenson's
physiology and hygiene; Peterman’s
civil government; Wheeler’s graded
primer; Bronson's speller and Swin-
ton’s word book. Competitive bids will
be asked for a primary and intermed
iate arithmetic to precede Wentworth's
practical, for a grammar to precede
Hyde's, a work In agriculture and a
series of writing books.

BIG AREA IS PLANTED
IN OATS IN SUMTER
Tli'e Crop Next Year AVIU Be
Immense One.
A favorable “sign of the times” Is
the unusually large oat crop tbat has
been planted In Sumter county thiB
fall, insuring as it does an immense
forage crop next spring. Americus
supply dealers, all of them, declare
that never before have they sold such
quantities of seed oats, and the good
work Is going on still among the late
planters. This year the farmers have
sold cotton at the lowest price and
at the same time paid higher prices
for oats and corn than In many years
past. Corn has sold at $1 per bushel
and oats proportionately high, while
the bulk of the cotton crop was sold
at 8$4 cents. Next year. It Is hoped,
conditions will be reversed.
