plains, Ga., Dec. 16.—Miss Emmie
Kali' Andrews was the charming
hostess Thursday afternoon at the
meeting of the "Merry Widow Club."
The parlor and hall was unusually
bright and pretty with roses and
’ terns. "Forty-Two,” “Old Maid," and
"Proverbs" were the Interesting
games played. The score cards were
pretty pen and Ink sketches, the
work of' the hostess. Miss Mattie
left Knowles and Lucy Williams made
the two highest scores, and In draw
ing for the prise, Miss Knowles was
the fortunate one, receiving a pretty
hat pin. Delicious refreshments, con
sisting of pine-apple with whipped
cream and cake were served at the
close of the games.

account of the death of Miss Bertha
Lunsford Sunday morning, which
came as a shock to her friends, who
are numbered by the score. Her
death was unusually sad, for she was
just budding Into young womanhood,
and a most lovable Christian charac
ter. The heart-stricken parents have
the sympathy of the entire town In
their bereavement.

Smithvllle, Ga., Dec. 16.—One of the
most brilliant assemblages seen in
many months, was the array of fair
ladles and gallant young men at the
McAfee house on last Friday even
ing, the occasion being a reception
tendered by Mr. and Mrs. W. Fort
McAfee to Mr. Emmett M. McAfee and
Miss Julia McMtchael, whose mar
riage has been announced to take
place December 31st. This was pre
ceded by a linen shower In the af
ternoon, which waB highly enjoyed by
the many lady friends of the bride-
elect, and a large number of hand
some gifts attested the esteem 'In
which she is held. The color scheme
was white and yellow and was artis
tically carried out ln all the decora
tions; the parlors, living room, halls
and dining-room were elaborately
draped in Southern smllax and num
bers of, jardinieres of palms, ferns,
and begonias added beauty to the
scene. Some very appropriate con
tests, “The Golden Wedding" and "The
Thanksgiving Dinner,” for the ladles
and “Recipe for Fruit Cake," for the
gentlemen, added greatly to the
amusement of the guests. Miss
Lucy Pipkin won the lady’s prize, a
lovely brooch, which she presented
to the bride-elect, and Mrs. F. P. Love
the booby, a toy coffee-mill. Mr.
Max Cawood won the gentleman 1
prize, a scarf pin, and Mr. Clyde Mc-
Kenney the booby, a toy cornet. The
supper was a magnificent spread, and
consisted of everything the most fas
tidious- taste could desire, from the
substantial barbecue to the daintiest
delicacy; In fact it was a veritable
banquet. Mrs. McAfee, who Is one
of Georgia's most beautiful young
matrons, and who is without a peer
in her love of hospitality, charm of
manner and grace as hostess, was
more beautiful than usual In a lovely
gown of black net over silk. She
was assisted in receiving by Mrs.
Garnett Pruett, who wore an ele
gant gown of white and Mrs. Maggie
McManus who was also attractive in
white. Miss Julia McMichael, the
honoree was beautiful in a white
silk gown with lace trimming. Pos
sessed with beauty, amiability and
gentleness, she hns been a popular
belle since her residence In Smifh-
ville.

John Qreen, an Americus negro ■
who for twenty,years has exlstod In «
that living hell, tho Georgia peniten
tiary, may be pardoned shortly if a
petition to that effect, signed by
court officials and hundreds ot citi
zens, is of any avail. John Green was
sent to the American Siberia twenty
years ago, along with Boley, Daniels,
another negro, as accessories In the
murder of another crap shooter. The
reat murderer, it Is said, escaped,
while Green and Daniels were sent
up for life, Daniels has been pardon
ed long ago, and now like clcmeucy
ls asked for the other man Who has
* on ’ passed though twenty years of hor
ror in the Georgia pen—enough, no
doubt, to have atoned for a half
dozen crimes of tho kind charged.
Afr. James Taylor Is working to se
cure the pardon desired.

take some action at the meeting to

rates which Amerlcus has had for so
many years.
