Casaccous Americus, already el
ated over the transfer of the gas
and electric plant here to the new
company, the Americus Railway &
Light Co., was given another thrill
yesterday when the gas bills for
November were presented upon the
cut price basis.
This was all right and proper, but
scarcely anticipated.
The new schedule of prices were
promised months ago, and at the old
rate of $2 per thousand Americus
turned down the gas and waited for
the introduction of the cut price.
As the flnhl taking over of the plant
has been just consummated; con
sumers rather expected the
schedule to go Into effect January
1st, covering the current month.
But instead, the new schedule of $1.50
gas was already effective.
And every consumer paid the bill
yesterday without a Kick.
The collectors, case-hardeded by
virtue of long time swearing at the
gas bill, wore yesterday the perren-
nlal smile that wont come off.
And the overjoyed consumer, the
burdened ox who pays the gas bill,
threw a spasm of delight Santa
Claus had indeed come to him, and
the world seemed brighter. And hla
home was made decidedly brighter,
too last night.
For a saving of 25 per cent was al
ready effected and he listened cheer
ily as the meter hummed. ’
What mattered It now, with the
price of gas down to $1.60.
Homes that looked like darkened
sepulchers for years past blazed last
night at every window. . Everyone
who burned gas Invited the neigh
bors over to .see the illumination.
People, long time enemies, forgave
each other and rejoiced with exceed
ing joy.
For Americus could be found with
out striking matches.
The new rates, as stated in the
contrafct, are $1.50 for Illuminating
gas and $1.25 for fuel gas, a reduc
tion from $2 and $1.75.
In view of this amicable adjust
ment of rates, It is understood that
the case of the Board of Trade be
fore the Railroad Commission, in
stituted to enforce a reduction In
prices of gas, will not be pushed, the
hearing being deferred for the time,
till January 7th.
Lawyers representing the Board
of Trade and gas company were In
Atlanta yesterday to appear before
the Railway Commission, when ad-

MORTGAGE IS FILED IN

Clerks Allen and Heys are engaged
just now In transcribing upon the
records here one of the most volumin
ous documents ever filled In Sumter,

Probably a hundred pages of the
court records will thus be consumed
in making the transcript.
The mortgage Is made by the Vir-
glnia-Carollna Chemical Co., to the
Central Trust Co., of New York, and
is for fifteen million dollars. Mortg
ages for larger amounts have been
recorded here, but few others were
more voluminous than this.
The document Is to secure bonds
Issued by the V.-C.-C. Co., and is being
recorded In every county In which the
company has a plant, hence the rec
ord made In Americus where one of
the best plants owned by the com
pany in Georgia Is located.

The people of several communi
ties are looking toward Americus In
a railway way, that is, they are anx
ious to establish railroad Connec
tfons with this city, giving them out
lets as well as furnishing this city
with more transportation facilities
than It now enjoys.
The Tlmes-Recorder has referred to
the correspondence between the
Board of Trade and the managers of
the A B. & A. Il. R. It has been de
sired for some time to secure a con
nection with the A. B. & A. at Byrom-
vllte, If possible. Efforts hare been
made to Interest the railroad officials,
but without definite results up to this
time. The last letter from President
Atkinson removed any hopes that the
company could be Induced to move In
this direction in the near future.
President Atkinson wrote President
Lee Allen as follows;
“I note the action taken by the
Board of Trade relative to th e pro
posed extension of the A. B. & A.
railroad so as to conect with Ameri
cus. While I appreciate very much
your writing me In connection with
the matter I regret to advise that It
Is out of the question for us to con
sider any extension whatever at the
present time. We have got to devote
our entire time energy and resources
to building up the road and getting
It established as already construct
ed.”
The people of three points are anx
ious for a connection with Ameri
cus. those at Ashburn, those at By
romvllle, and those at Vienna. The
Secretary of the Ashburn Board of
Trade writes that there are twelve
miles of graded road from Ashburn
west, almost on an air line to Ameri
cus. The A. B. & A. owns ' six
miles of track from Irwinville, com
ing west toward Ashburn. From
Irwinville east the A B. & A. could
be tapped. The Board of Trade at
Ashburn Is willing to send a commit
tee over to Americus to discuss the
matter If any interest Is felt in such
a proposition here.
Over at Vienna there Is a strong
sentiment In favor of getting Into
connection with Americus by direct
rail. It Is said the people there
would assist financially In such a pro
ject The A B. & A could be con
nected with at that point.
The proposition to build from Am
ericus to Byromvllle Is the one that
Is regarded with the most favor
hero. There is a tram road running
out threo and a half miles from By
romvllle, which has recently , been
acquired by the Elberta Crate Co.
This concern Is putting In a big
crate factory at Byromvllle, and it
Is felt that It would be a decided
advantage to Ave the tram road ex
tended to Americus. The crate com
pany, It Is stated, Intends extending
the road anway to the Flint river.
The Messrs. Byrom and other enter
prising citizens of that vicinity are
prepared to take up with Americus
the project of doing better than this
and pushing the road on to Americus.
The tram road Is now being put into
first class shape with steel rails, etc.,
and' has a physical connection at
Byromvllle with the A B. ft A The
Messrs. Byrom, In their last letter
to the Americus-Board of Trade Bald:
'We are satisfied It Is only a ques
tion of time when this road will ran
on through to Americus, and in our.
opinion the sooner It Is done the
bettter It will be for us all.”
{While nothing will be done until
after the holidays It Is quite probable
that a meeting will be arranged for
some time In January with the rep
resentatives of the Byromvllle plan.
It la also not unlikely that there will
bo a conference with the representa
tives of the Vienna interests.
