In order to correct a grave injustice
which they believe has been done
them in a circular letter sent
from Savannah to the various U.
Chapters of the state by Mrs. N. B.
Harrison on the subject of the Wlrz
monument, Mrs. J. S3. Mathis and
Mrs. James Taylor, of the local chap
ter, have prepared a letter which will
he sent at once to all the chapters.
The trouble arose from the fact that
Mrs. Harrison, In her zeal signed the
names of Mrs. Mathis and Mrs. Tay-
to the circular, which sharply
criticises Mrs. Mathis and Mrs. Tay
lor—though not by name—for Induc
ing a reconsideration of the -Wirz
monument site by the Savannah con
vention.
The history of the monument pro
ject is sketched, and the inability to
get a suitable site In Richmond set'
forth.. Doubtless many of the Chap
ters wondered at the signatures of
Mrs. Mathis and Mrs. Taylor to the
somewhat remarkable circular, but
their amazement will give way to
other emotions when the reply pub
lished below Is received.
"As our names have been signed to
a circular letter together with the
names of the other members of the
Site Committee, and sent out to all
the Chapters of the state, and also
given to the daily papers of the state
for publication, we feel that a great
injustice has been done in that we
had never seen the letter, did not
know it was contemplated, and can
not sanction it in any Tespect.
"First, at the Macon convention the
resolution to erect a monument
Capt. IWirz at Andersonville was car
ried with the Idea of vindicating the
man rather than to memoralize the
place. At the Americus convention
when the matter of site came up
Americus was chosen by a good ma
jority. On the last day of the con
and General Lee, and other famous
Confederate heroes. They were well
pleased.
"At Atlanta, this new site commit
tee met fhe representatives from
Richmond to consult about its lo
cation there. We learned at once that
Monumental avenue would not be
considered by the authorities at Rich
mond at all. Then a site on the white
house grounds was discussed. That
would have been a fitting and prom
inent location.
'In the event that could not be ob
tained they felt sure a location In
Hollywood would be granted. 4 (Mrs.
J. E. Mathis) opposed Hollywood to
the committee In Atlanta. I felt to
place ii In a cemetery no matter
where, would be to lose Its power as
a memorial and object-lesson. In
Hollywood would be so many more
scores of private monuments, hand
somer and more Imposing than this
that it would not get the attention
and hence serve the purpose for which
It was Intended.
“We have made no move to defeat
the will of the Georgia Division and
have employed no measures to change
the location from Andersonville but
through the highest and purest mo
tlves. We believe the Georgia D1
vision will accord to us the right, to
thus place ourselves before the di
vision and the public. We have pos
tals and letters In our possession
showing that a large majority of
Chapters endorsed our position.

SEVERAL INACCURACIES
In Statement Given Ont by Mrs. Hnr.

Times Recorder:
My attention has
been called to an Interview In Satur
day’s Savannah Press, given out by
Mrs. . N. B. Harrison on the Wlrz
Monument muddle.
ventlon, when a large number of
delegates had gone home, the matter
was brought up and laid on the table
until the convention should meet In
Augusta the next year, (1907.)
"At the Augusta convention the
question was put to the house In
way that precluded argument. The
chair stated that to select any place
other than Andersonville we must
go back of the Macon convention
yesclnd that resolution and begin all
over again. At that time the delegates
had not given enough thought to the
selection or site to vote Intelligently,
so many refused to vote at all,
there were more than BOO present,
and only 01 voted.
While it Is not my desire to get In
to anjr newspaper controversy, there
are several Inaccuracies in the
statements made in this Interview, one
of which demands some particular
notice, as follows:

Now as to liow and why this mat
ter of Bite was brought up at Sav
annah: As members of the site com
mittee and living so near to Ander
sonville, we realized from the begin
nlng the very serious mistake tt
would be to erect this monument
there. iWe consulted our Veterans’
camp here. They felt os we did, that
it would be very unwise to place this
monument at Andersonville. We
canvassed our town, only one man
said: ‘Put It at Andersonville.’’ We
had numbers of letters from promi
nent men over the state urging us to
place our monument some place other
than Andersonville.
“As members of the U. D.. C„ with
the good of the Division at heart,
and as members of the site commit
tee we felt that we had a right to
ask the Chapters in the state to con
sult with each other in a regular
meeting and notify Miss Baxter and
us whether they desired this post
ponement for a reconsideration of
site. The replies that came to the
site committee were In the ratio of 3
to 1 for postponement If there were
‘other devices’ we know not of them
It was by request of a majority of
the Chapters of the State sent to Miss
Baxter that this actiqp was taken.
She had no right to refuse the de
mands of the Division.

This is why and how It
brought up again at Savannah.
When the vote came at Savannah,
after much discussion,, for and
against Andersonville, the vote was
94 to 73 against Andersonville.
The minority was so determined to
erect this monument at Anderson
sonvllle that they defeated every
movement to erect It any where else
in Georgia. The session was pro
longed another day to decide this
question of location.
A great many delegates were com
pelled to leave before it was set
tled which was late in the after
noon. In a last desperate effort to
carry their side against us they ac
cepted Richmond by a vote of 40 to 38:
