CANINE HAD RABIES, IN
OPINION OF EXPER1
■ .1 -
AdvisQs the Killing of
Dogs Bitten.
The bulldog killed on Taylor street
last week, after an exciting chase,
and after the rabid animal had bitten
numerous other dogs, really had rab
ies, as has been demonstrated by ex
pert examination of the brain of the
dog killed..
In order to be fully assured upon
this point the owner of the dog had
the head sent Immediately to the
deorgta State Board of Health, for
examination.
Yesterday, the folowing reply was
received here.
Atlanta, Ga., Dec. 23, 1908.—Dear
Sir: "We have examined the dog’s
brdin which you sent us, and wish
to report that there are quite a few
negrl bodies present: these, as you
know, are considered to he pathog
nomonic of rabies.
"\Yk would advise that you kill
the dog bitten by this animal at gnee.
,If I can be of further service, let
me know. Cordially yours,
(signed) H. F. Harris, Sect’y.
Expert opinion, therefore, settles the
point as to whether the bulldog kill
ed here was mad. Dr. Harris thinks
he was, and acting upon his advice
the owner of the rabid bulldog will
at once kill a,pet dog which was bit
ten by the other.
The rabid bulldog bit a number of
other dogs, and If Dr. Harris diag
nosis Is correct Amerlcus may have a
wholesale mad dog epidemic.

Matrimonial Market Shows

"Marriage licenses are not being
Issued as numerously this December
as last,” said Capt. John A. Cobb, the
genial Ordinary, yesterday, as he clos
ed the hooks after duly authorizing
the nuptials of two loving couples.
"Last December we issued ninety-two
licenses, but this month It looks like
the total will fall below that. »Only
about 25 have been Issued thus far,
but business Is picking up a little.
Money Is not quite so plentiful this
year as last out on the plantations.
“The marriage license business is
brisker In December and January
among the negroes, partly on account
of the holiday season, but, chiefly
because this Is the time the negrqes
enter Into contract with planters.
They have drawn all the money they
can, and cast about for a new scheme
to touch.the farmers by arranging for
a marriage. They sidle up to their
boss and Insinuate ’ that If they can
get the coin or an order for a license
’dey can jes’ naturally git married.
It would be a stony-hearted employer
who would refuse the dollar Beventy-
flve. That Is only a step, though.
The negroes of course nave nothing,
and make a plea for a little furni
ture. In this way they manage* to
pass the limit set by the planters for
the negro, and all on sued sentimen
tal grounds that It Is well-nigh Im
possible to resist.”

The report,of the Wesley Memorial
Hospital for the year ending Oct. 81,
1908, has just been Issued. It Is of
(nterest to the whole state, as both
the North and South Georgia Confer
ences of the Methodist Episcopal
church, South, have the work in
charge.
One feature of the report is the free
treatment accorded patents unable to
secure proper medical attention. Since
its establishment in 1905, tho Hospit
al has done more than $26,000 worth
of free work for the deserving poor.
For the year ending Oct. 31, the value
of this work was $14,000. The med
ical attention Is rendered to the ije-
serving poor of whatever creed, the
aim' being one of general philanthrp-
py. This is a most liberal showing,
and one that will emphasize the wide
power for good possessed by the "Wes
ley Memorial Hospital, for relieving
the sufferings of those who are In
need of medical skill which they
themselves are unable to provide.
This charity is a most worthy on*.
