church of Americus on Sunday,
preaching both morning and evening
to large congregations, whose closest
attention was held by this eminent
minister throughout his discourse.
Dr. Burroughs Is spending the holi
days in Thomasville with his daugh
ter. returning there yesterday after
a pleasant visit in Americus.
The fact that Dr. Burroughs has
been formally called to the pulpit
o ftliis church added interest to his
coming, and quite the entire church
membership, as well as others, en
joyed one or both of his sermons.
Dr. Burroughs ranks among the
foremost pulpit speakers In the
South, and his sermons here on Sun
day fully sustained his reputation as
forceful orator and profound stu
dent of the bible. Upon each occasion
he charmed the hundreds coming to .boys in blue in time of need,

of Sumter, as along towards the
witching hour of midnight the vali
ant police chief who has worn bo
long that badge of distinction will lay
it aside to assume for a term of
years other duties.
His term of office really begins with
the new year, 1909, Friday morning,
but the sheriff-elect will sidestep the
Friday hoodoo by starting an hour
or two earlier.
His new commission came yester
day, and “Sheriff Feagin" is as proud
of it as an ol maid who has landed
her first near beau. t
While he and Deputy Fuller will
have offices at the courthouse, of
course. Sheriff Feagin’s glances will
wander oft towards the police bar
racks, and he will stand as ever ready
then as now to lend a hand to the
hear him.
While In Americus Dr. Burroughs
discussed with the church committee
quite fully the subject of his coming
to Americus, but as yet reserves his
decision therein.
While he gave no expression re
garding his intention in the premises,
those who conversed with him express
the belief that he will accept the call
here. He is still pastor of the First
Baptist church of Nashville, where
he has been for many years.
From a financial viewpoint the ac
ceptance of the call here would be
quite a sacrifice, yet the place ten
dered Is not without Its advantages
and these, It is hoped, will outweigh
that of remuneration. Dr. Bur
roughs will write the committee here
at once upon his return home.
