Cleveland, Ohio, February 10.—
Out of work for more thau two
months, George Goodsldo Saturday
tried to obtain food and shelter by

antlvivlsectlon movement, nnd, feel
ing that a human subject would he
better for experimental purposes than
an animal, he caused the folowlng ad
vertisement to be inserted In a local
newspaper:
"1 wish tu hire my body out to
some hospital o rdoctor for medical
or scientific experiments."
Although GoodBldo hasn't succeed
ed in finding any ono who cared to
experiment on him, he has found sev
eral offers of employment by means of
the unusual ndvertisement.
"I have been lu this country two
years," Goodslde said today, “and

And a permanent job. For two months
I haven't done any work, and I paid
for the ndvertisement with the last
quarter I had. Hunger has made me
weak, and I cannot work now
anything that requires hard physical
work! I would welcome an opportun
Ity to get into a hospital and let the
doctors experiment on me. I would
get enough to eat, and I feel I would
not be permitted to leave until I was
In good physical condition again.
Several persons offered me money af
ter the advertisement appeared, but
I refused It. I don't want charity,
only a c-i nice to regain my strength
and an n nortunlty to work."

Chicago, III., Feb. 9.—"A few days
ago when the Russian government
floated a loan of $250,000,000 which
was subscribed 30 times over, that
wa3 Russia's notice to Japan, “Get
ready for war and stay ready, for I'm
going to lick you!”
Rear Admiral Kobley D. Evans,
retired, seated In his apartments
tho auditorium Annex this evening,
made this significant statement. The
old sea fighter was talking guardedly.
His statement was not made upon the
spur of the moment.
"And what Is more,” added the ad'
nilral, “Japan herself recognizes and
realizes the position In which she Is
placed. The handwriting Is plain.
Japan can read."
Other statements or International
import, as viewed from tho viewpoint
of “Bob" Evans were made. Summar
ized. they are as follows;
The United States will have no
trouble with Japan. Neither will
England.
When the next Russlnn-Japancse
war does come, Germany, France and
Austria will espouse the cause of the
Russians.
England will find herself allied with
Japan by virtue of existing treaties
What the result of It nil will bo
man can foresee.
Some Huy Fear No War
In discussing purely national
fairs with reference to the navy
the United States, Admiral Evans
said:
"We are approaching the day—I
not say it Is near at hand, but
are approaching it gradually—when
the United States will have a fleet
of warships so great, so powerful,
that no power on the face of this
earth will dare tackle ub!”
“Let us look at those things i
see them," said "Fighting Bob,”
ferring to Japan.
‘‘Japan has not the slightest desire
In the world to fight with her bank'
era. England and the United States
arc Japan's bankers. Tho Japanese
are a clever people. They realize the
truth of what I have just said. There
Is a limit to the resources of that
country. Japan, I believe, can see
the end of those resources even now,
The country cannot go on at the
rate at which It Is spending money
now. It is out of the question. Japan
recognizes that a conflict with Russia
is inevitable, and the government -Is
straining every nerve, exhnustlng cjh-
ery possible effort to put Itself In
state of preparedness.
SENDING Of HEARTS IS
NOW A PRIME SUBJECT

Russia Eager for IteUenge
But the resources of Russia are
practically Illimitable. Russia
anxious to avenge itself on Japan, and
as I said before, the floating of that
enormous loan was Russia's plainly
spoken notice to Japan of what the
Inttui might expect.
"The day Is earning when the rich
cst nations of the earth only will
wield the power. These nations are
the United States. England, Russia
and France. Gen tony, despite the
efforts of the Gorman emperor, is

“That la out* reason »vay • sn> that
when the great conflict does come
Austria* France, Italy and Germany
will line up against the Japanese,
with England the ally of the lat
ter. And what is more, England
knows it. Tho very haste with which
she is rushing to put her navy in
inpe proves that she knows it.

Juvenile and oldmaldica! Americus
are alert just now to tho valentine
proposition, and the show windows
about the city resemble miniature
slaughter pens wltji their stocks of
arrow-pierced and bleeding hearts,
lacerated livers and little Cupids In
u state of really shocking undress.
Sunday is the true St. Val’s day, but
Friday and Saturday will see the
goods moving mailward.
Of course thb nice little boys and
girls of the dear little Rollo type
will send pretty valentines, but then
there are others.
Spiteful neighbors and dear old
dames whose noses turn skyward
when they meet, will send each other
prodding comics carrying a hateful
sentiment, while the "girls of the six
ties,” still unmanned, will get a mall
ed prodding at tho hands of the hear
less and jeering multitude.
The Indications are that the send'
Ing of Valentines in Americus is far
from being an obsolete custom.. Tho
stores have a greater variety this
year than has been the case for sev
cral years, with the trend towards the
sentimental valentine Instead of the
cheap comic.
The former are already to be seen
In the hook store windows, costlier
and more attractive than ever, while
the cheap lithographs are for sale
only on demand.
The postofilce clerks expect a rush
of mall the latter part of the week,
when St Val's Day arrives, that will
equal in volume, for the compara
tively short time It lasts, the Christ
mas moll. The “sainted" day comes
on Sunday, but that will make no dif
ference to the sender of valentines.
The clerks say that the mail will
begin to Increase as soon as the
eleventh, the extra amount being
evenly divided between the local dlS'
trlbution and tho outgoing.
