made only for land too poor to produce without them. If poor land

quality often rejected by farmers as
being able to produce hardly enough
cotton to pay for the cultivation. Men
tion has previously been made in the
Times-Recorder of the success which
nltended this first effort to grow Sum
atra tobacco In this county. Some of
the stalks grew to a height of eight
feet and the yield was most satisfac
tory. Friends of Mr. Raymond, who
have expert judgment, have assured
hint that the quality was the equal
of any tobacco raised.
“I am going to plant ten acres In
tobacco the coming season," said Mr.
Raymond yesterday. “I am convlnc--
ed that there is much money to be
made In growing Sumatra tobacco in
this section. This time I will try
Havana tobacco and if It produces
better than the Sumatra I will adopt
that for permanent planting. There
Is abundance of sandy soil nnd red
clay lands which are not now being
used very profitably can surely be
made very remunerative by raising
tobacco. I will have to build ware
houses before the crop Is ready, and
Inter on I Intend to establish a fac
tory—that Is, If the production Is
Increased to that extent."
From the experience of Mr. Ray
mond it appears to be practically as
sured that the cultivation of tobacco
In this county can be carried
with most satisfactory results,
fact, the island of Sumatra, hitherto
having something of a monopoly ot
that grade of tobacco, Is fully equal
led by the Boll of Sumter. This fur
nishes another great and most profit
able staple for the efforts of Sumter
rounty farmers and may soon divide
the field with cotton and other
growths at present familiar to every
farmer in this section.
