ARM CARRIED IN SLING
AS RESULT OF TALE
New Bedford, Conn., Feb. 23.—Upon
tile completion of Its work of float
ing the cruiser Yankee, the John Ar-
bucklu Wrecking Company may un
dertake the project or raising the lin
er Republic, which went down off No
Man's I-and a week ago. Thc use of
compressed air and electricity In com
blnatlon Is proposed ns a means of
raising the steamer from her position
40 rathoms below the surface, a depth
at which no diver can work. The Ar-
buckle company has added powerful
magnets to Its wrecking outfit, and as
heavy flat cars have been successfully
ralsed In railroad work by this means,
It Is thought that the same principle
applied to the hull or the Republic,
supplemented by iiontonns filled with
compressed air, offers a feasible so
lution of thc wrecking problem.
AV illtani AV. AVortherspoon, the en
gineer In charge of the work on tho
Yankee, said that he had considered
with R. O. King, the engineer who or
iginated the Idea of employing com
pressed atr in wrecking, the problem
of raising thc Republic. Mr. King's
theories have been the basis of all
the successful operations of the Ar-
buckle wreckers. Mr. Wotherspoon
said:
''We have been looklug for a deep
water joli for some time, and consid
eration was at one time given to a
i orurt that was wrecked up In tho
Klondyke region. The Republic would
afford a beautiful opportunity for
demonstrating the method, and she Is
certainly worth saving, if it was a

Mr. King has been studying the prob
lem, and lias made a careful inspec
tion of the Floridn, to learn from her
condition as much as possible of the
extent of the damage to Hie Repub
lic."
The Arbuckle wreckers have also
Gcen giving considerable attention to
a project for raising thc battleship
