Burlington, March 15.—The Grand
Jury Is In session, and unless you
can show a birth certificate proving
that you have been on earth twenty
ono years, or your face Is sufficient
ly tightened up to prove that you
have graduated from the kindergar
ten, there Is absolutely "nothing do
Ing” in the way of quenching thirst
down this way.
Saloon keepers are taking no more
chances now on infantile Intoxication,
since several of their number have
been Indicted for selling to minora.
'Make affidavit or die of thirst”
the motto that was draped over the
lunch counter in every life-saving sta
tion today.
There are only a half dozea notar
ies in town and they have been strick
en with writer's cramp by tho un
precedented rush of business. Those
who can't afford to pay tho notaries
are picking quarrels with mothcrs-la
-law In order to cultivate a set of
wrinkles.
A full beard can be cashed for a
drink In any saloon In town. This
has started ail the younger man
growing whiskers, and tho village bar
ber has set aside one razor for per
sonal use In case the desertions
among his patrons continue.
Bartenders have been warned to
take no chances on some of the Law
and Order sleuths using fictitious
beards to get evidence. Every bunch
of whiskers Is believed to be guilty
until It proves Its Innocence. Each
individual hair Is yanked by cautious
bartenders.
Whiskers of the pinfeather variety
draw nothing stronger than "sassa-
parll,’’ or "sody.” The rule works a
great hardship to so-called old young
men, whose faces are youthful but
whose thirst Is full grown.
Simultaneously the saloon keepers
have caused consternation In "old
toper’’ circles by enforcing the law
which prohibits the selling of liquor
to habitual drunkards. This has
started several “well preserved” cltl
zens toward the pledge.
