LITTLE DAMAGE FROM STORM.
Gov. Smith and the three prison
commissioners did not come to Amer
icus yesterday, as expected, for the
purpose of Inspecting the several
farms In Sumter that had been offered
the State as a prison farm, but instead
the party returned to Atlanta from
Turner county.
A telegram from Governor
Smith to Captain John A. Cobb yester
day, announced the return of the party
to the capital, after Inspecting the
Greer farm below CoiMele.
The Governor Btated In his telegram
that he would go more Into details by
letter at later date.
It was confidently expected that the
party would come to Americus yester
day from Cordele, and there was some
disappointment In consequence, as 1 t
was thought that the lands offered
here would thus be inspected.
The commission will have a serious
problem on Its hands in disposing of
the white convicts, even though a pris
on farm be Anally secured within the
next few days.
It will be Impossible to provide tem-
porary housing and equipment for 300
men on a farm by April 1, as It would
require several weeks to make such
provision.
There Is not space enough to take
care of these convicts at the state
farm near Milledgevllle, which Is al
ready crowded. Hence It will be nec
essary to make some provision for
them until a farm can be secured and
the quarters erected and supplies se
cured.
It looks, therefore, as If It may
necessary to put the white convicts on
the roads. The commission may And
some way out of this, but at present it
looks dubious.
Should this be done it would be only
a few months at most.
The only disposition which might be
made of them under the law la tempor
arily to'Tuse their labor, but la not
likely, in view of what has transpired
and the resultant public sentiment
that the commission would conildtr
this'Lntthod even for a moment, hence
the dilemma.
The white convicts must go to work
on n farm or temporarily on the roads,
and present Indications are that the
latter course may have to be the solu
tion of the problem.

Americus and vicinity was swept by
a Aerce windstorm at 2 o'clock yester
day morning, and while no material
damage resulted the situation was
ominous for a time. The gale, accom
panied by a downpour of rain, was tho
fiercest that has struck this section in
some time, and hundreds of cltlsens
aroused from slumber were appre
hensive of a disastrous cyclone and
stood ready to seek placet of safety.
Reports from the country districts
were to the effect that ssveral negro
cablne and email barns were damaged,
but not materially. No berm resulted
here.
How to. Increase the Yield of Fruit
Increased fruit crops are more often the result of good manage
ment than of good luck. Fruit trees and fruit plants need a liberal
supply of
Virginia-Carolina
Fertilizers
The trees absorb plant foods—that Is, nitrogen, phosphoric acid
and potash—from the soil just the same as any other crop. Experi
ence has shown this over and over again. This truth has become so
well recognized that “ return to the land what the tree removes if you
would expect the best results ” has become an axiom with the best
growers.
Apple, pear, peach, orange and other fruit trees soon respond to
careful fertilization. But be sure to use the best fertilizers.
“ I made a test with other companle/’ fertilizers,” says Mr. H. O.
Lowry, of Manatee County, Fla., “ and yours proved to be the best.
The yield where I used Virginia-Carolina Fertilizer, was just twice as
much as where the other two companies’ fertilizer was used.”
Hundreds of users say Virginia-Carolina Fertilizers are cheapest
because of their good qualities—give better satisfaction and quicker
results.
.. . Many facts of great interest and value to fruit growers are pub-
lished in the new 1900 Farmers’ Year Book, a copy of which will be
sent free on application to any of our sales offices.
