Fending Controversy Proves Tariff ii
Personal Issue.
New, Orleans., I^a., April 10.—Six
months ago, when AdoHe Reul, mll-
lionaire.planter and brewer of Chlhau-
hua, Mexico, entertained Otto Vor-
rath, of Hanover, Germany, Vorrath
showed him the picture of a winsome
German lass, Margaret Gottschaid,
whose parents Iluel knew years ago
The planter, who Is a man Just over
40 years, fell In love with the pictuie
and began corresponding with the
young lady. Two weeks ago lie cab
led to her a proposal of marriage, to
which she gave assent, and it was
agreed that the prospective bride and
groom should meet in New Orleans
and be married.
Miss Gottschaid came and Ruel ar
rived from Mexico. They met for tht
first time, and after an exchange ot
greetings the wedding was arranged
It took place In the office of the Ger
man Consul.
IHE SESSION IS BRIEF
AND COMES TO CLOSE
few Cases Are Disposed
Of This Term
Judge Z. A. Littlejohn, Solicitor-
General Williams and members of the
Americas bar attending Webster
superior court at Preston returned
home Thursday afternoon. Ihe ses
sion having come to an end unexpec
tedly for lack of business. There
were a number of cases, especially on
the civil docket, to be tried, but the
Illness of eounsel Interested forced a
continuance of many such cases for
ihe session, with the result that the
fall docket will be an unusually heavy
one for Webster, where as a rule
there is but little litigation. It was
expected at the opening of the court
Monday last that the session
would continue throughout the week
hut for the reason stated it came to
an abrupt end at noon Thursday
was at this session of Webster court
that Solicitor General Williams made
Ills “maiden efTort”’ as State's pros-
”iecutor, acquitting himself in a man
of ner that struck terror to the hearts
Solicitor Wil
liams secured a verdict In every case
tried at the term except one, wherein
a mistrial resulted. Judge Littlejohn
will go to Schley county next week,
where the prospect Is good for an ev
en shorter session than at Webster.
In fact, in all of the six counties of
Ihe Southwestern circuit, Including
Sumter, the spring court sessions will
he marked this time by unusual brev
ity. a fact that reflects Improved con
ditions, more especially on the crim
inal side.
WOMEN’S WOES
Americus Women Are Finding Belief
ut Last.
(New York World.)
The ways and nteana committee has
been forced by public sentiment
abandon the duty on tea and coffee.
Chicago clubwomen expect to ob
tain 600,000 signatures to thetr pro
test against the higher taxes
atocklngs, gloves and underwear.
Forty Republican representatives
have signed a memorial asking for
more protection for the lumber, coal,
and iron ore Interests ot the West
and Northwest, along with a duty ot
10 per cent on hides.
Thirty of this number are said to
have Informed Speaker Cannon and
Chairman Payne that If their de
mands are denied they wilt vote
against the rule putting the bill on
its passage.
Speaker Cannon Is quoted by the
Tribune as declaring that the Re
publican party Is going to pass the
tariff bill without unnecessary de
lay, “even If It requires Democratic
votes.”
Mr. Bryan and Representative Fitz
gerald are exchanging the compll
ments o fthe season tn the matter of
“What Is a Democrat?"
Champ Clark, the Democratic lead
er ot the House, is having as much
difficulty as Speaker Cannon In keep
ing his followers in line.
There are Republican representa
tives who advocate free raw mater
ials and Democrats who clamor for
protective duties on lumber, sugar
and rice.
Less than 30 years ago Gen. Han
cock was hooted from one end of
the country to the other for saying
that the tariff was a local Issue. It
now seems to be a personal Issue.
Also An Indication He Isn’t from Ohio
(Washington Post.)
Dr. EHot's declination of the offer
of the poat at St. James Is another in-
-dlcatlon that he is the “first living
American," at lesat In that class.
It does seem that women have
more than a fair share of the aches
and pains that afflict humanity; they
must “keep up,” must attend to du
ties In spite of constantly
hacks, or headaches,
spells, bearing-down pains; they must
stoop over, when to stoop means tor
ture. They mucst walk and bend
and work while suffering from
kidney ills. Kidneys cause
more suffering than any other organ
of the body. Keep the kidneys well
and health Is easily maintained. Read
of a remedy for kidneys only that
helps and cuYes the kidneys and Is
endorsed by people you know.
Mrs. 1. M. Cobh, 809 Forsyth street,
Americus, Ga„ says: “I was subject
to headaches and pains through the
small of my hack for some time ami
often went for days without getting
relief. I was finally advised to try
Doan’s Kidney Pills and procured a
box at Dodson's Pharmacy. The re
sults of their use were so gratifying
that I procured another box and since
that I felt a great deal better. Doan’s
Kidney Pills removed the pains In my
back and my kidneys are now much
stronger. 1 shall continue taking this
remedy and have no hesitation In rec
ommending It to other persons.”
For sale by all dealers. Price 60
cents. Foster-MIlburn Co., Buffalo,

States.
Remember the name—Doan's and
take no other.
Americus lias an opportunity to
get a tive hundred thousand dollai
cotton mill, one that will give em
ployment to not less than five hun
dred hands, and which may give em
ployment to several hundred more
than that, and whose pay roll would
be not less than a quarter of a mil
lion dollars a year.
The question Is, do the people
Americus want a great Industry
this character sufficiently to show of e vll doers there,
their faith In Americus and Its op-
p.)i (unities as a manufacturing point
by going down into their own packets
to the extent of 3160,000, as their share
of the burden of putting up the
buildings, equipping the plant, and
providing the necessary working
capital.
If Americus Is to go forward it
must secure some more Industries.
Cotton mills have been uniformly pro-
fltahle In the South, especially so in
the Georgia cities in which they
have been built, and have been Im
portant factors In the development
of the most progressive cities of tile
state. Augusta, Columbus, Rome,
Athens, Griffin and other towns have
received a tremendous Impetus from
the building and operation of mills
of this character. What has been
done in them can undoubtedly be
done In Americus.
There will be no trouble in secur
ing the outside investment to the ex
tent of $360,000 If the people of Am-
erlcus have sufficient faith In the city
as a manufacturing point to put up
the additional $160,000. The mill will ^
