the Creamery.
Some One Needed to
Take Initiative With
Stockholders.
A representative of the Third Dis
trict Agricultural College has been 111
the market for some good milch cows
the present week. The herd now at
the college Includes seven cows, but It
has been decided to Increase the num
ber, even though the creamery may not
be obtained, and several additions will
doubtless lie made In tbe near future
The college authorities have as yet
received no propnsilinn from the own
ers of the creamery, the Anterlcus and
Sumter county stockholders. Supt.
Col I it in lias seen a number of the
stockholders personally. All, or practi
cally all, were well pleased with the
idea of the College Inking hold of the
creamery and .seemed to reel that no
better disposition of the property
could he made. Hut no one among
the stockholders has apparently had
time to assume the initiative, call a
meeting or otherwise arrange to per
mit the college to have the use of the
plant. Some steps In that direction
will probably he taken soon, however.
The creamery plant is now lying idle,
bringing no revenue to its owners atid
naturally deteriorating from lack of
care. As no one stockholder has any
great amount of money Invested 111
the plant, and nil nrp patriotic Sum
ter county citizens, devoted to the
work the agricultural college Is doing
and eager to sre Its Influence expand,
there Is hardly any likelihood that op
position will arise among the stock
holders to the proposition to either
lease the plant to the college or make
it a present of the same for a term of
years or altogether.
Supt. Collum stated yesterdaf that
if the college was given the use of
the creamery it would quickly arrange
for a competent dairy man to take
charge of the plant and instruct the
dairying class of the college In the
mysteries of butter and cheese mak
ing. It is felt that this could he de
veloped into an important branch of
agriculture In this district If the col
lege were equipped for the work.
"We would put In probably a tot(d
of thirty cattle for the first year,” said
the superintendent, "and then increase
the herd as occasion required. Wo
could probably make the department
self sustaining, and perhaps profitable
as well. Our first purpose, of course,
would he to make it or practical value
to the boys at the school. I believe
the effect would ho to encourage
number of them on leaving the school
to either en^er the dairying business
directly or to make It one of the fen
tures of their farming oiierntions.”

FEW HEDIUSOS IX SUMTER,
IH T PROSPECT IS 00011.
Cupid'S vacation in Amerlcua l»
drawing to a close, for l.'> cent* cotton
is going to start the preachers work
ing overtime In welding the gordian
knot. Although the city's population
is Increasing annually at a substantial
rate the marriage license record does
not seem to he keeping up. Fewer
persons have married this year than
last, and there Is a falling off of sever
al couples as eompsred with 1908. The
"hook worm' has not yet been charg
ed with resimnslblllty for this slump
In the marriage license market, hut
it may have hnd something to do with
It. The decrease In the number of
licenses Issued, as compared with the
growing population of the city and
county, Is really marked.

They nre members of Hie firm of Isx k-

acquainted'with the capitalists in the
North promoting new mills In that
section and 111 the South, and ate in
position to take care of us if wc are
irally a: all in earnest in our desire
to secure a mill for Amerlcus.
"If we do not avail ourselves of the
present opportunity," continued Presi
dent 1sillier, "I feel it will be hopeless
hereafter to broach the matter. We
•annot continue tulking Indefinitely
along these lines. The public will
weary of it and filially refuse to inter
est Itself at all III the subject. We have
done nn abundance of talking and
what we need now Is to back up our
faith with our works. In other words
subscribe.
'It is said of the ramous Dean
Swift that on one occasion lie was
called on to preach a sermon soliciting
aid for a chnrttable puriiose. He an
nounced as Ills text: ‘lie who glveth
to the poor lendeth to the Ixird,' clos
ed the hook and said: 'If you have
faith In the security down with the
dust,' and sat down. Now that is the
way I feel about this cotton mill prop
osition. If we have faith la Amerlcus
and Its prospects ns a cotton manu
facturing point the time Is right here
lo pony up, to show our confidence by
our subscriptions. No more talk
ought to he necessary."
“I do not think It should be neces
sary to mnke a general appeal to the
public for subscriptions to secure $50.-
000," continued President Lanier. "Wo
hnd about $10,000 In sight, I think,
from a few of our leading business
men. when the original proposition
was under consideration. Five of
them, I believe, were willing to put
up $25,000. Really I don't see why
ten to fifteen of our prominent busi
ness men should not got together, sub
scribe the $50,000, and ensure the
erection of the mill the coming year.
We would have local directors and
local supervision of the enterprise.
That Is the way the money should he
obtained. 1 don't think It should he
necessary to carry a list from door to
door and place a share of stock here
and n share of stock there. We have
tbo many men here able to take n
block of it to have to do business In
that way. At least I hope that Is the
way it Is going to be, and that we cau
Ret together, say n score of the lead
ing men In business circles, anil have
the entire stock placed before the
meeting adjourns."
It will bo hoped by the community
at Inrge that President I-anler's fallli
Is not misplaced aud that at an early
date he will be In position to announce
that the desired amount has been sub
scribed.
