William J. Gaynor, the Tammany
candidate elected on New York's next
Mayor, was born at Whltestown, N. Y.,
in 1851. He was educated at the
Whltestown Semlnlary and later in
Boston. From the latter city he weal
to Brooklyn, in 1873 and engaged in
Journalistic work while pursuing the
study of law. He was admitted to the
bar In 1875. He became known and
feared as the foe ot corruption In pub
lic life, and gained a national reputa
tion by his effective work In breaking
up "rings" within the Democratic
party of which he was an active ad
herent and by the part he took In se
curing the conviction ot Jqjm Y. Mc-
Kane, a notorious and powerful Dem
ocratic 1k»b, for election frauds. He
was elected Justice of the Supreme!
Court of New York In 1893 on the
nomination of the Republican and In-I
dependent Democrats, for the term ox-1
plring in 1907 and was then re-elected. :
He resigned from the bench when
nominated for Mayor. He has strongly
advocated personal liberty and is re
