This is the welcome news of the recognition of the standing ot the college with the War Department at Washington, which recognizes that. In addition to being the leading district agricultural col lege of Georgia! at has also already taken high rang as a military training school, giving-its students consider able proficiency In the manual of arms and in company maneuvers and im parting to them other soldierly qu tl- ities. . The claims of the school were laid before the proper authorities by Superintendent.Collum and- yesterday a letter was received indicating quite plainly that all obstacles will speedily disappear and a full equipment Of arms and ammunition for target prac tice be furnished the cadets. It is proposed to secure the use. possible, of the old target range used by the military encamped here during the Spanish-American war. on the ground now leased to the country club, the range running up to Council's mill pond. It Is believed an ideal and per fectly safe range could be established there for the use of both the A. C. Cadets and the Americus Light In- fentry. May .Hatch to Cofdelo. The college boys are enthusiastic in their devotion t‘o the military end of their college life. ^An invitation has been acceplei 1 for the corpa to visit Cordeie on November 11th, at the Fair there, and probably sixty boys will go. The cadets are, desirous to get a ta3te of reai military life by inarching the .kdhlrty miles to'Cordele accompanied by ' ! ^'.Wagons with their outfit. This plan .':.^ttay be adopted If the weather is good. In its military' feature, as in every "either feature''6f its activities, the Third District College is unquestion ably ahead of all the other district col leges in Georgia. WANT MINISTERS TO EOT OUT CHEWING NO LICENSE HAS YET BjEN ISSUED [apt. Cobb Waiting for Offi cial Copy of Law. Applicants to Carry Pistol in Public Musi Give $100 Bond With Bonds man Worth at Least $1,700—Ordin ary Must Pass of Their Character. Nobody hi Americus or Sumter cour- lus yet secured a legal right to carrv a pistol in the open. Of coursa, no one ever will get the legal rigat !o carry one concealed. I'nder the new state law it is un lawful to carry a weapon where It can l>e seen unless a license so to -lo has first been secured from the or dinary of the county. And up to tills time no license giving that privilege has been issued -by Ca.pt. Cobb, lias All the Forms on Hand. “I have* the boo^c and the forms of license and bond required by the statute on hand," said Capt. Cobb yes terday, "hut I have not yet received 3 copy of the law and will not issue a license until I have the official copy of the law in hand to govern men my actions. Under the law t.ve new statutes are supposed to be primei and sent out within sixty days after the legislature adjourns, so I suppose it will not be long now before thiy are delivered. 'Until then I will no. be prepared to authorize any one carry a pistol unconcealed. "So far,” continued the ordinary, several parties have been in to see about getting licenses. Two or three negroes were among them. When called attention to the fact that they must give bond for $100 they were somewhat phased. I informed them, and everybody else, that I would not accept a bond except where the bonds man was good Tor $1,700, that Is for the amount of the $100 bond, plus the big homestead allowed by law. Hnst l’ass on Character. Not only is the ordinary required to get a good bond whenever he issues a license,” continued Capt. Cobb, “but the duty is also put upon hint ot de terminlng whether the character of the applicant is such that he is justified in licensing hint to carry a weapon iu public. Of course, a man can have a pistol on his own premises. The law does not take cognizance of that. So, unless I am thoroughly satisfied that an applicant is a law abiding man in disposition and otherwise a man who is to be entrusted -with jk weapon in public, I will not issue a license.’ While the law is undoubtedly a good one, its effectiveness is very much' questioned. The vast majority pistol biers will pitobably go “totelng” them, without regard either the new or old law. The only thing Is that occasionally some one will be picked up and fined for viola tion of the new statute, who might otherwise escape punishment at all. BIG BARN BURNS WITH CONTENTS JT D’SOTO Large Barn on Jones Farm Contents of Hay, Grain and Machin ery Wholly Destroyed—Origin of Fire Not Known But Supposed to Have Eeen Incendiary. Three fires in tile country near Americus Tuesday morning swept away a new school building, a p.au- tation barn and contents, besides a small dwelling and contents. The fires were in different localities and the losses in the aggregate without insurance, amount to a considerable ini. The story of the tire near Plains, re sulting in the burning ot a school- house, Is told at length elsewhere. Tluree miles east of Americus W. T. Freeman lost a small dwelling house by fire yesterday. The -building was unoccupied at the time, and stored therein was a small quantity of cot ton and cottonseed, all of which was lost. The fire resulting in greatest loss was the burning of the large barn of Mr. George D. Jones on his farm near DeSoto. This fire originated at 1 o'clock yesterday morning, and re- sulted in the complete destruction of the barn, together with ten tons hay, 300 or 400 bushels corn and consid erable farm machinery. The loss will amount to $1,500 or $2,- 000, perhaps, and is probably complete, as there wa s little if any insurance. Will Our W.C.T.U. Follow Example of Other Towns Will the W. C. T. In this work the women have been sadly hampered, they complain, by the example set by some of the ministers who learned to love the plug or the choice cut In their younger days and have failed, to free themselves from the habit. . When a young disciple of the weed Is requested to cease its use as the masculine substitute for chewing gum, he Is quite apt to retort by calling a: tention to the fact that such and such a clergyman Is addicted to a similar MAY HAVE COMMITTAL TRIAL ON TO DAY: For fine of the Men Held no Murder Charge. STUART’S * BOCHU AMD JUNIPER COMPOUND FOR KIDNEY TROUBLES SO Years on the Market CATARRH A. SPECIFIC BLOOD IMPURITY Catarrh is a deep-seated blood dis ease, one which no amount of local treatment will ever permanently cure. The beneficial effects of washes, sprays, inhalations, etc., are only temporary, and when left off the old condition returns, because the blood is infected with catarrhal matter and impurities. This impure condition of the circulation irritates and in flames the delicate mucous mem branes and tissues and produces the well known symptoms of ringing poises in the head and ears, mucus in the throat, headaches, watery eyes, partial deafness, sore throat, general impairment of health, etc. This con dition will remain, growing worse as long as the catarrhal matter is al lowed to remain in the blood. Being a specific blood impurity, there is only one way to cure Catarrh, and that is Waukegan, Ill., November 1.—“Silt to purify the blood. Nothing equals Relent" Crombie is the name of a tiny S.
