DYKES. if South-Western Georgia AMERICUS, GA. ■Ity. Liberality and Courtesy Accorded Its Patrons % DIRECTORS: The success that various email cdun ty fairs have met in different parts of the state has served to revive an Interest In such agricultural and live stock displays for Sumter county, and It la quite likely thlat next year wtl see thta, the leading county of South west Georgia, with a county fair that will throw all of the others into the shade.- -Stewart, Crisp and other counties of this Immediate section are having county fairs this year, tand a consid erable measure of success Is looked for. It Is realised that these county fairs can be made Instrumental in considerably advancing the general agricultural Interests of the counties In which they are held. This has been the case everywhere and It would undoubtedly be the case here. In addition these fairs have the effect of greatly stimulating trade at the points where they are held, and for that reason they also appeal ur the business men of the town. Sunitf-r Fairs In the Past. “Many years ago," said a citizen-yes terday, “Sumter county had some of the finest county fairs ever held In Georgia. Out where Mr. A. W. Smith now lives there was a large tract of land iVvoted to these fairs, with se /• eral substantial buildings and a half- mile race track. Many people we.-t drawn here, not only from Sumter, but from several adjacent counties, and the annual fair at Americus be came quite an event.- "There Is no reason why this olrl- tlme prestige should not he speMl'y re-established. This county and sec tion are immeasurably ahead, agricul turally, of what they were twenty yeans ago, the interest In diversified agriculture has been enormously stim ulated, our products are more varied and of higher quality, and we fould have exhibits that would far distance anything in the old fair. Then, too, :we have tk-e agricultural college to assist us. The college has centered the at tention. of farmers throughout this congressional district on Americus and Sumter county; the college would undoubtedly make fine exhibits and work to stir up enthusiasm gener ally, and I' predict that the first fair held would be such a success that Us repetition from year to year would be assured. > Should Begin Work Soon. 3 think the Board of Trade should take this matter up In the near fu ture. It would be entirely In keep ing with Its plan for advertising Sum ter county and bringing farmers here to locate. The fair would be a big advertisement and both city and county would reap benefits therefrom. Wh.it better work could the city’s business organization do than begin to lay the plans to pull it off successfully and I believe the Board might well take the matter up at Its next meeting and be gin to look ahead.’’ It Beats the Record Made By Brake in 1900-Statement Is Made That He Has Developed New Method of Raising Corn. Columbia, S. C., Nov. 1.—South Car olina -has a boy who Is the champion of the world as a corn grower. He Is only 14 years of age and has produced 258 bushels of corn on one acre of ground. His home is in Marlborough county • where Drake produced 253 bushels about 10 years ago, which la the greatest yield ever recorded for one acre In the history of the world. Tk-e name of this young marvel has not been announced. He is a member of the Boys’ Corn clubs and his records are being examined by the United States farm demonstration department In Washington. Unofficially it is stated that the boy has developed a new method of corn culture. The fu-ll story of how the great yield was produced -will be print ed as soon as It is announced by Dr. Segman A. Knapp from Washington. The boiy -has written a detailed account of the yield, telling every step that was taken. The yield is much greater than that of Basconibe Usher, the 17-year-old boy who produced 152 1-2 bushels last year and who won the national .prize for the greatest product and on all points. All that is known about the boy is that he is the son of a preacher . and produced the wonderful yield on the parsonage land. ! The yield of Drake of 253 bushels Is j looked upon as a marvel. The yield of j this unknown boy Is even greater. He did all of the -work ‘himself.
