GREAf PROSPERITY IN
AMERIGIS AND SUMTER
Merchants and Fanners Be
gin Auspiciously.
Amerlcui and the splendid section
surrounding It enter with this week
upon another year' of unexampled
prosperity. The merchants of Amer-
Icus, De Soto, Plains, Leslie, Hunting-
ton, Andersonvllle and, In fact,
throughout thi* section, did last year
a good business and coilectloni were
satisfactory. The financial enterprise!
did well and are paying their usual
good dividends, with a surplus added
to the profits. The banks are carry
ing large deposit accounts and money
was never so plentiful. The corn, oat
and cotton crops were all very satis
factory. The prevailing prices were
so much better than usual that most of
the farmers are in very sound financial
condition. About the usual number of
mulea are being sold at pricea some
what higher than formerly but cash Is
being paid for much of the stock. Sum
ter county has all the corn and bay
that will be needed to feed the stock
for next year, and most farmers have
raised their meat for another year. The
tendency among the planters Is not so
much to increase the acreage In cot
ton, but to continue to plant largely In
corn and make hay, and Intensify their
cotton production by good cultivation
and Improving their lands.
