Washington, Jan. 10.—The bureau
of soils of the United States depart
ment of agriculture has begun the
winter's work In the state of Georgia
with soil surveys of Bulloch and Sum
ter counties. With the reorganization
of agricultural high schools in each
congressional district, there has been
a considerable demand for soil survey
work In Georgia and the examination
of soils in the sections in which these
agricultural high schools are located.
For this reason Bulloch county, In
the First district, and Sumter county
In the Third district, were selected
for the season's work.
In Bulloch country, C. N. Mooney
has charge of the soil survey, assisted
at present by W. C. Byers. Owing to
the large size of the county, two ad
dittonal men from the soil survey
force will be sent to assist Mr. Moon
ey, and the survey completed at an
early date in 1910.
The Work at Americus.
J. C. Britton, who was formerly con
nected with the Agricultural High
School at Americus, Ga.. has charge of
the soil survey In Sumter county, be
ing- assigned to this work on account
.of his familiarity with the soils and
agriculture of that section. He is
assisted by Mr. Welch and tho party
has Its hearquarters at Americus dur
ing the ifrogress of the survey.
Soil surveys have already been made
In Cobb, Pike, Hancock and Tift coun
ties, where agricultural high schools
are located, and additional soil sur
veys have been made in seven other
localities In Georgia.
The soil surveys give an excellent
county map In each ease, upon which
is shown In colors the extent and lo
