THE AMERICUS WEEKLY. T1MES-REC0RDER. THURSDAY. JANUARY 20.1910.
TRESTLE ON FIRE AND
TRAIN IN tHE DITCH.
Accident on Seaboard Near
Richland.
A Seaboard freight train, Columbus
to Americus, went down before a burn
ed trestle early last Thursday
morning, the scene of accident being
north of Richland on the Columbus di
vision. The engine was overturned,
and four or five freight cars smashed
Conductor Farrlsh, it is said, was
scalded to some extent, while a negro
flagman sustained a broken leg. The
woods had been burned near the tres
tie recently and the flames may have
thus been communicated to the bridge.
The debris was cleared and traffic over
the line resumed yesterday evening.
The wrecking crew from Americus
went to the scene at daylight to clear
the track.
The folowlng special from Columbus
last night gives further details of the
wreck:
Columbus, Ga.. Jan. 13.—Freight
train No. 122 enroute Richland to Co
lumbus, ran Into a burning trestle near
Sulphur Springs, 14 miles below this
city this morning. Engine and four
cars derailed and badly demolished.
Conductor J. A. Farrlsh seriously In
jured In left side, leg and arm hurt.
Fireman John Colbert had left
shoulder dislocated and face cut. En
gineer escaped by jumping.
PROPOSE NEW ROAD
AMERICUS TO SEA.
Ashburn Wants.RoadiFrom
Here to Brunswick.
The Hoard of'Trade of Americus,
feeling an Interest In the suggestion
of a possible establishment of a new
railroad route from Americus to the
sea, via Ashburn and Brunswick, Is
preparing to extend an Invitation to
parties at Ashburn who are Interested
In the project and wish to get into
communication with the business In
terests here and a't other points.
This matter was brought up at the
recent meeting of the Board of Trade
by J. E. D. Shipp, Esq., who had some
communication with the parties. John
G. Hutchinson, Esq., a well known at
torney of Ashburn, has visited Ameri
cus two or three times looking quietly
Into the matter. He represents Messrs.
v Betts & Evans, wealthy saw mill men
of Ashburn, and others behind the
plans that are being laid.
Ashburn lies about forty-five miles
southeast of Americus. From there to
Brunswick there are several small
rallroada^that jnlght be connected up
Into a a through line. What Is desired
Is to get an outlet at Americus. To
build the forty-flve miles of road from
here to Ashburn appears to be an es
sential feature of the plan for a road
to the sea. Outside of the building of
the bridge across Flint at Cork Ferry
no obstacles of any character will be
encountered In the building from here
to Ashburn, the country being mainly
level and engineering and construction
an easy matter.
Ho estimates have been furnished as
r to the coat of building the road, but It
Is probable that It the Ashburn people
- come here they will be prepared . to
give an approximation of the cost It
Is not unlikely that arrangements will
v be made to accord them a hearing at
1 'the next meeting of the Board.
