such contests generally are. Every
farmer In Sumter county is Invited to
enter for the prizes. Judges will be
appointed who, at the harvesting time,
will call at the plantations where corn
has been grown for the contest and
supervise the gathering of the crop
on the acre set aside for the test.
Witnesses will be on hand to substan
tiate the statements that are made as
to the yield. The heaviest yields get
the prizes.
In return the planters winning the
prizes are expected to give the public
generally tho benefit of the system
used by them in cultivating the crop,
the quantity of fertilizers used on the
acre In question, etc.
Mr. J. W. Hightower took the mat
ter up yesterday and made a personal
canvass. The result was that Inside of
two or three hours the entire amount
needed in cash, $175, had been sub
scribed, as follows:

While, of course, no one has any
authority to speak In advance of tho
action of the County Commissioners ns
to what that body will do, there Is
every reason to belluve tho desired ap
proprlatlon will be made and the hos
pital put Into excellent shape for tho
current year.
Two weeks ago the ladles appeared
before the Board of Trade and that or
ganization donated $100. At the laat
meeting of the City Council they pre
sented their plea to that body and an
appropriation of $500 was the resale.
If the County Commissioners make the
appioprlation that will be requested of
them, $500, the managers of the Ins:!
tutlon will have $1,100 toward the $3,-

ate the hospital. The remainder of
that amount, $2,500, will be secured
from pay patients and from the efforts
of the ladles In bazars and other mon
ey making plans.

enlisted the sympathy and support of
the women of Americus as the hos

ferred to their charge they have been
