The magnifllcent roads of Sumter, leading out from Americus In every direction, have been complimented throughout Georgia ns the best in the state south of Atlanta, or anywhere out side of Atlanta's own county, to an ext nt to cause Sumterians to blush with modest pride. Tile good roads—and they are really good—even gound commendation In Albany, an unexpected source ,to be sure. A recent issue of tho Herald contains the following laudatory ar ticle upon the good roads of Sumter county. "An Albany citizen recently rode in an automobile over the splended road Sumter county built a year ago, be tween Smithville and Americus, this morning expressed wonder at thi splendid condition of that niagnlli cent highway. "The road was built by the late It. T. Christian, superintendent of roads of Sumter, and has been kept in 'ts excellent condition by the use of that simple yet wonderfully effective ap pliance, the split-log drag. “I wish the Dougherty county com missioners would adopt tho split-log drag in working the roads of Dougi- erty" said this gentleman. That road between Smithville and Americus is as smooth, or even smoother, than Broad street's paving or vitrified brick. It is kept in that condition at little expense by the use of the split-log drag. “It is tho custom of the Sumter au thorities to drag the roads once a week. One negro driver, with a two- horse team and a split-log drag, cov ers fifteen miles of road a day. By going over the roads once a week, this simple outfit keeps ninety miles of road in splendid condition. "The split-log drag works on a very simplo principle. It cuts down the high places in tho road and fills up the low places. "The drag also packs the earth, and a road on which a split-log drag is used gets- better and better the older it gets, Instead of worse as i3 the case where tho drag is not used. “I wish the Dougherty county au thorities would try tho split-lag drag as an experiment. "It would also be fine on our city streets. If the local authorities would take a rido over tho Sumter county rond of which I speak, they could not fail to appreciate the won derful and cheap appliance, the split- log drag." MILLS IN AMERIGUS AT HEIGH F Of SEASON Plants Here Rushed With Orders. Americus fertilizer plants—and there are live largo ones here—are at the height of a very busy season just now and all are rushed with orders for cottonseed meal or commercial fertilizers. For the demand this year is going to be considerable even though the accreage planted in cotton is not Increased to great ex tent. Many farm wagons loaded with cotton seed were upon the streets here yesterday, the seed being ex changed for cotton seed meal at the mills. This meal is very extensively used as a fertilizer for both corn and cot ton. and with fine results. Predictions at Col. Tom Hudson’s department of agriculture indicate a consumption of about S00.000 tons of commercial fertilizers during the cur rent season, which is somewhere round about what Georgia used last year. Til's means an expenditure of ap proximately $10,00,000 by Georgia’s planters alone for fertilizers. Year by year planters who have learned a thing or two, are putting more of it under corn and other pro ducts and proportionately less under cotton. In other words, they are di versifying the crops and a large per centage of the annual consumption of fertilizers is going under other crops than cotton. There are about 10,000,000 acres of ground in Georgia under cultivation for all products. BUSY TIMES IN VOTING THIS YEAR IN SUMTER Americus Will See Plenty Elections. An attack of the grip Is often fol lowed by a persistent cough, which to many proves a great annoyance. Chamberlain's Cough Remedy has been extensively used and with good success for the relief and cure of this cough. Many cases have been cured after all other remedies had failed. Sold by all dealers. Americus pecan grower* who ex pect to derive remunerate o returns from their groves hero ore long are interested in the offer rfused for a grove of eighty acres In Leo coun'y, some twenty miles south of Americus, a day or two ago. Many growers here have seen these fine trees. Eighty thousand dollars was refused for the eighty acres two days ago— $1,000 per acre. The grove in question is the prop erty of the Ramsey estate and owned by Mrs. F. D. Ramsey and her two daughters. The Rantsey plantation is not a large one, but Is one of the most de sirable in Lee county, not taking the pecan grove into consideration. Americus voters will soon hear the merrimeutal boot of the able candi date who will swoop here from the mountains of Atlanta and the back districts as well in the hunt for of fice. For It is “election year" Georgia, and every place from gover nor to coroner must he filled again. The entire batch; governor, cou gressman, legislators and county of ficers—all must be elected again dur ing the good year 1910. And the able voter of Sumter will he on the watchtower. The election of members of tho legislature and county officers will command the greatest attontipn here, and 11 an early primary is called by the executive committee the boys who want the Jobs will soon bo around hand-shaking the voters, jollying the mothers and kissing the babies. Already several counties are ar ranging for early primaries—many-aa early as April and May, and Sumter will get into the game soon along with the others. Tax Collector I. B. Small calls at tention to the fact that man)' voters here are not yet registered. He is anxious that voters qualify them selves to take part in the elections which will be held during 1910, and they cannot do so if they neglect register before the books close a few weeks hence. Under the new registration law the lists close to voters six months before an election instead of twenty days as heretofore. Long before the campaign opens and Interest in the candidates stimu lates the voters the registration books will be closed, and the voter who does not put ills name on the books through a stern sense of duty now will be deprived of the right of exer cising his franchise. OLD ROOKERY AGAIN BLAZED. BUT FIRE IS EXTINGUISHED. Crowd Watched Tile Department Get llnsj- There. The old wooden rookery next the watertower came Into the limelight yesterday with a light on its shingle roof, but It was “the light that failed" as usual. As usual, the blaze was put out and the old shack remains. Time and again it has caught fire, hut In every instance nothing happens to prevent the fire department doing" its duty and the old landmark stands. Doubtless hundreds would have re joiced yesterday to see t burn, but It didn't. It takes a child to make a wise man feel like an Ignorant fool. A Safeguard to Children. "Our two children of six and eight years havo been since Infancy sub ject to colds and croup. About threo years ago I started to use Foley's Honey and Tar, and it lias never fail ed to provent and cure these troubles. It is the only medicine I can get the children to take without a row.” The above front W. C. Ornstean, Green Bay W'ls., duplicates the experience of thousands of other users of Foloy’s Honey and Tar.
