With a report like a salvo of ar tillery. jarring the village and wrecR j„g one end of the building the safe in the country store of Mr. Lee G Childers, at Adams, was blown up by burglars Sunday night. The cracksmen secured a small sum of money and then fled hastily from the scene. The fact that Mr. Childers had paid out considerable money to his farm bands Saturday night prevented richer haul by the thieves. Early yesterday morning Mr. Chil ders came to Americus and reported the burglary, and three hours there after three white men, strongly sus pccied of the crime, were stored away in thistle Sumter here, awaiting in vestigation. The men gave the names of Leroy flurkhalter, Hubert Perry and Al bert McEachen. Two, if not all three of them, It is said were at Adams Sunday evening. While all stoutly de ny the crime Sheriff Feagin and Dep uty Fuller, who captured them near Americus. belelve they have made no mistake. As soon as the officers received tews of the burglary they left Ameri cus for Adams. Six miles out of the city they met the trio and leveling their guns, arrested them. Collier of the Macon police force was waylayed and shot in East Macon nt midnight. One ball penetated the of ficer's head, another in his groin. The officer stated before he was placed m the operating table at a local bos' Pltal that James Andrews, a son of Jailor Andrews, shot him.' The po- reeords show that Andrews was arrested Saturday night. Officer Col lier. according to the records, made the arrest. Andrews surrendered to his father and was placed in Bibb county jail. WILLIAM W. DRANE IS DEAD IN SUMTER. Esteemed and Aged Citizen Passes Away, Captain William W. Draue, one of Sumter's aged and most esteemed clt- Izens, was stricken by death at noon on Monday at his home In the coun- j try, west of Americus. Mr. Drano had j appeared In his usual health, though' greatly enfeebled by weight of years. * and the end was as sudden as It was j unexpected. Captain Drane was a res ident of Sumter county for more than a half century and no citizen was more widely known or more gener-! ally esteemed. He was n veteran of! the Civil war and has lived quietly! upon his plantation here since the flag he followed was furled nt Appo mattox. Ho Is survived by threo sons, Mr. William Drane of Americus, Eu- geno Drano of Friendship, and Al bert Drano of Washington. The body was embalmed by O. C. Davis, of tho Allison Furniture Co., here, and the time and place of funeral will be an nounced tomorrow. COUNTY IS LIBERAL IN ITS GIFT TO HOSPITAL Conlribution of $500 for Institution. One thousand dollars Is the goodly sum contributed by the city and coun ty towards the maintenance of the Americus and Sumter county Hospital for the current year, an amount which will go far towards defraying thi flxed charges and current expenses of that splendid charity. The city council voted $500 to the hospital two weeks ago, and Mon day the board of county commission ers voted $500 likewise. Each nmoynt Is to he paid In month ly Instalments. The .county commissioners were in jneeflng yesterday, and were waited upon by a committee of ladles from the Hospital Association, escorted by Aldermen Lee Allen, W. E. Brown and C. J. Clark as a committee from tho city council. Upon making known their wishes, the ladles were asked what amount the city council had given tho bospit Tills Information given the com' missloners readily voted the hospital a like sum, and $i,000 Is thus secured for that Bplendld charity assisted alike for years by the city and county. With this amount assured, and the movement to obtain funds from other sources well under way, the malntnln- ance of the hospital during 1910 seems a certainty.
