And so It wa3 that a | demure young Americtn maiden made a confession yei.e isy that opened up a long vista of pleasing possibili ties. She was talking about how much she enjoyed automobillng, and how de lightful It was to have aa attentive sweetheart who was the proud posses sor of a machine and had an abund ance of time to speed It in. ‘‘It Is certainly a treat to go out with him." she confided to another girl, as they lingered over soate laces and embroideries In a popular store and swapped confidences while the salesman was busy elsewhere. “He handles the machine so well that I al ways feel absolutely safe with him. And It Is really thrilling to go spin ning over the Plains road at thirty miles an hour." ‘‘Does It take both hands to hold the machine down when It Is going that fast?" Inquired her companion, as * I little dimple showed Itself In her < cheek, and a twinkle came into her eyes. “No, Indeed.” replied the young darling with the auto-owning sweet heart. "Do you know ho has learned to run his car with his feet. And you would never know but that he was guiding it will, his hands.” The other girl broke out laughing and from the perplexed look that came over the face of the fair confessor It was evident that she didn’t quite see the point of the laugh. Who the young Amerlcus man is who can guide hU machine with his feet cannot be publicly stated. Both of the girls are strangely silent on that most Important point. 1 he unusually large number of wag- tns hauling commercial fertilizer from Americas recently has caused considerable comment and led to the belief that farmers of this section were buying a great deal more of it this year than heretofore, and In creasing the cotton acreage. Such, however, Is not the case, and the presence of the number of wagon* bare is explained by the fact that farmers are hauling It with their! teams instead of by rail. Good country roads and low freight! rates here explains it. ' J Fertilize is shipped to Amerlcus | from the factories, that Is, brands not manufactured here, and at com petdtive railway rate*. If thil same fertilizer Is shipped by local agents to farmers at n arby railway stations the local freight rate from Amerlcus la added to the cost, of course. This has been done to a great extent in years past, and the farmers paid the freight charges. But the construction of good roads here has brought about a change. Farmers can now haul heavy loads of guano from Amerlcus direct to their farms with greatest ease, and thereby] save the local freight charge to th^Ir ■ railway point, which Is from 75 cents' to $1 per ton. | A farmer using fifty to a hundred J tons fertilizer thus effects a consider- j able saving In hauling It over the fine! roads of Sumter. The Herald tells about It as follows: City Attorney James Tift .Mann has rendered an opinion to the effect that a firm haring its main office In __ other city, but doing business through a branch office In this city, must make returns In this city for taxes on Its notes and accounts In connection with tho business done through Its local office. The city attorney was asked for an opinion In this matter because of the failure of the Amerlcus Grocery Com pany to return the notea and accounts of its Albany branch'. The coifipany gives as a reason for this failure that ail Its notes and accounts, both those at tho main office nnd those at the Al bany office, are returned at Amerlcus, and therefore should not be returned for taxes In Albany, as this would be double taxation. The city attorney's opinion holds th*at all necounts and notes that have their origin In the business conducted by the Albany branch must be returned for taxation In Albany, and the firm has been noti fied to that effect. The Amerieus office of the Western Union has received no advices as yet about the removal to It of the long distance branch of the Southern Bell Telephone Co. Neither baa It been officially advised of the new fifty word night letter system that Is being ) Introduced and which* promises to be a very popular Innovation. By the new “night letter" system, 50-word message submitted before midnight at the day rate, for 10 words will be delivered by the telegraph com pany about 8 o’clock In the morning,! or delivered on the first mail delivery at the point of destination. | This new device to even the heavy I day and night loads on the wires by offering cheaper rates for the night I service is one of the Improvements] promised at the time of the merger of the American Telephone and Tele-! graph' company with the Western! Union. I Another Innovation which will be ' Instituted is being tried now In Chi cago, that of transmission and deliv ery by telephone, and collection of telegraph charges by the telephone company. If the plr.n proves success ful In Chicago It will be put in prac tice over all the Western Union'dlvls- Ions. ‘A The mere mixing of materials to obtain analy sis requires no special knowledge.
