Thirty-six thousand dollars was the
Tound price paid last week for a farm
of eight hundred acres, live miles
east of Amerlcus and owned by Mr.
Arthur Rylander. The property was
formerly known as the Burkhalter
place, and since coming Into the pos
session of Mr. Rylander a few years
ego has been greatly Improved and
brought up to a high state of cultiva
tion. Tho farm was sold yesterday to
South Carolina investors, ; he sale in
cluding the livestock on the place. At
the prlco paid the land netted more
than $10 per acre a splendid increase
In value In recent years. The pur
chasers will continue the farming op
erations already launqhed by Mr.
Bylander and are highly pleased with
their splendid purchase. The salo was
made through Mr. G. H. Waddell, of
the Southern Realty Co., of Amerlcus.

the construction of a large brick an
nex to their commodious stable at
Wheeler and North Jackson streets.
The new building planned will front
Cotton avenue and occupy tbe corner
at Wheeler street, opposite tbe Amer
icas Grocery Company’s plant. It will
have a frontage of forty-five feet,
and as an annex to tbe other build
ing have a depth of nearly three hun
dred feet back to Jackson street The
ground was cleared off yesterday and
■work upon tbe building will probably
he started this morning.
The many Amerlcus friends of Mr.
DeWltt C. Pickett, for some time a
resident of ttris city, will watch with
much Interest the result of the cam
paign ho is waging over In Terrell
to secure the honor of representing
that county in the house.
Mr. Pickett I3 well known te be an
indefatigable worker, a hustle*, from
start to finish, and his friends l,vre
are fully awpre, without his telling
them, that a pretty effective canvass
Is on with him In tho field. Who Is
running against him Is not known
but whoever k<e Is he has a pace set
for him by the former Amerlcus man
that will take all of his energy to
keep up with from now to election
day.
Long Interested In state politics, as
he has been, It Is not surprising that
Mr. Pickett seeks a seat In tho leg
islature. He will mako Terrell an

United States Will Build
Good Hoads.

Washington, D. C., Marchi 10.—Good
roads building as a settled govern
ment policy and the use of prisoners
in United States penitentiaries for
this purpose as an economic and hu
manitarian measure were discussed
by the house of representatives for
several hours this afternoon.
The wisdom of such a policy was
strongly urged by the friends of the
measure.
Although Its opponents were equal
ly determined in opposition and In the
minority If the number of speakers
may lie taken as an Index, no vote
was reached and the question went
over until Wednesday of next week,
when the debate will be resumed.
The question came up on the bill of
Representative Anthony, of Kansas,
to use the military prisoners at Fort
Leavenworth and the prisoners In the
United States penitentiary at that
point to construct a military road from
Fort Leavenworth to Fort Riley.
To this bill Col. Livingston,
Georgia has proposed an amendment
providing for the construction of
