COTTON CROP IS BEING
PLANFED IN SUMTER
Acreage Here No Larger
Than Last Year.
Farmers in Americus yesterday re
port a very busy week “down on the
farm/’ as the season for planting .the
cotton crop is at its height, and all
over the county farmers are thus em
ployed. N'ot an acre more will De
planted this year in Sumter than last
year, the farmers say.
There is no additional labor for a
greater acreage, and besides, the high
prices of mules, meat and grain pre
cludes any possibility of a larger acre
age.
Instead, the farmers this year will
plant less cotton, but fertilize it more
and work it better, thus insuring a
larger yield in lint at an even less
cost of cultivation. More coru and
oats are being planted this year than
last year in Sumter.
A. C. Lewis, assistant state ento
mologist, has recently been in Ameri
cus. where he came to oversee the
sending out of the resistant cotton
seed that the state board of entomol
ogy :s d.stribuling this spring. The
seed they sent out this spring were
grown for them at the following
places.
Mr. Ed Howell, Vienna, Ga.
Col. M. B. Council, Americus.
Mr. Jesse Faust, Plains, Ga.
Mr. Z. T. Wall, Ellavllle, Ga.
Mr. C. W. Sutton. Edison. Ga.
They have distributed the cottar
seed to over 2,500 different farmers.
Mr. Lewis has been working on this
disease of cotton for five years and
has secured by continued selecting
and hybridizing several strains that
are quite resistant to the black root
disease. He recommends that the cot
ton be planted where cotton died last
year or the year before.
The cotton, however, should not be
Planted after cow peas (except Iron)
sugar cane, water melons and canta
loupes. ns these crops support the
nematode worms and this cotton is
not as resistant to these worm as It
is to the black root disease.

Americus friends of Major James W.
Furlow, of the Fourth Battalion of j that of last year _
verdure now.
When cotton touched 16 cents it
was predicted that the farmers would
be so demoralized they would plant
little except cotton and the acreage
would be the largest ever known In
this section.
That this prediction has failed, how
ever, is shown by the fact that the
acreage is to be planted in cotton in
this territory is hardly as large
J. TV. Shiver Will Build Broadhurst
and 1III1 Homes.
Contracts for the building of two
handsome residences in Americus for
Mr. R. S. Broadhurst and Mr. Allot
Hill, respectively, were let yesterday
to Mr. Joun TV. Shiver, the well known
.contractor and builder. The Broad
hurst residence will ho erected at tho
corner of Barlow and Hill streets, and
will be a handsome two-story eight-
room home and complete in every way.
Mr. Hill’s residence will be built on
Lee street, next to that of Mr. Shiver.
It will contain six large rooms and
will be made thoroughly complete
and attractive withal.
Philippine Scouts, and now doing his
second term of service in the Philip
pine Islands, will be Interested in the
following clipping from a Manilla pa
per concerning army movements in
our new possessions.
This command Is to be sent to the
district of Davao, where it will do per
manent garrison duty. The Manilla
Journal has this mention:
"The 4th Battalion of Scouts, com
panies 37, 43, 48 and 49, are VIsayans
and were stationed until recently in
Samar. They arrived in Manila Sun
day and are in camp on the Manila
flats. They are under orders for the
present to participate in the maneu
vers at Camp Stotsenburg.
“Major James TV. Furlow is the
new commander of the 4th Battalion
having Just been detailed from the
4thl United States Infantry. He suc
ceeds Major Harry S. Howland, who
ha3 returned to tho 26tn Infantry in
the United States.
As commanding officer of tho gar
rison, Major Furlow wll in all prob
ability also be made governor of the
entire Davao district.”
In some parts of the county the
acreage is a little larger, but it is
equalized by the fact that in the lower
part of the count/ it Is a good deal
smaller, many of the farmers In that
section having planted corn on an ox-
tensixe scale.
The farmer of South Georgia la, as a
rule, a very level headed fellow and
with the big crops of corn and other
foodstuffs raised last year and the fine
prices they brought, hie considers it
better to stick to them in a measure
than to risk his all on cotton.
Of course, cotton will always be “the
crop” In this section, but the farmer
now arranges his crops so that when
cotton fails he no longer feels that
he has lost everything.
