WHY Before the summer Is well under way It is probable that South Caro lina farmers will Invest between $150,- 000 and $200,000 in Americus homes and In the magnificent farming lands of the country round about the city, j Deals are in sight, It is stated, in volving $133,000, and the outlook s tbat other interested parties will <e on the ground for farming lands and city homes before ninety days more have passed. Already $180,000 of Sumter county properties have been bought by South Carolinians, all within the past year. livery Investment that has been made Has proved so satisfactory that tho3o who have put their money into , Sumter county soil have been encout- i aged to go further on thi3 line, with t others following their example. I As soon as the planting season is ' over several parties of South Caroli-i- lans, from different sections of tbat j state, will be here on tours of in. i vestigation that will probably re- ! suit in purchases of farming lands i and the settling of some of them in the ccunty. These nre not Included in the state ment that there are already deals m prospect aggregating $150,000 to $200 000. The man to whom Americus aad Sumter county are Indebted for this bringing of the advantages and oppor tunities of this section to the atten tion r.f the wealthy planters and in vestors of South Carolina Is Mr. O. H. Waddell. Mr. Waddell came to Americus couple ct years ago, quietly surveyed the city and county, reached the con elusion that there was nothing bet ter to bo found in the South than Sumter county, settled down here for the real estate business, and at once began to call the attention of former friends and acquaintances In South Carolina to what this section offer ed. LIGHT MLE 01 GRAIN HERE 10 1HE FARMERS Practically No Demand for Corn and Oats Farmers of Sumter Not Buying Grain as Feed to Raise Cotton. The Bcsults Up-to-Date. The results were not long In ar riving. Speedily wealthy men from that state came on a visit of inspec tion, were quickly convinced that the half had not been told them, anj the result was a heavy Investment »1 South Carolina coin in this county. Among the deals that were consum mated through the Instrumentality Mr. Waddell during the past year or so, In whlchl the buyers were South Carolinians, are the following: J. A. McCullough and asso ciates, Broadhurst term of 550 acres $17,000 D. W. Bbaugh, 2,480 acres of the Rylander place at Cobb 47,500 S. J. Wilson, 1,212 acres of the DeSoto plantation 37,000 S. J. Two wealthy planters not only contemplate considerable In vestments but are thinking of moving their families to Americus and pur chasing homes In this city. The outlook apparently la excellent for a considerable Influx of South Carolina families Into the county dur ing the present and the succeeding few years. Those who are buying large plantations are men of very pro gressive Ideas and will not be satis fied to turn the places over to negroes. Skillful white tenant farmers will come and In gome casea, at least, places will probably be cut up into smaller farms and disposed of to South Carolina farmers who are willing to move here. flood Roads a Browing Card. The coming of Mr. Waddell to Americus supply merchants, the class of dealers who furnish far mers their supplies of meat and grain during the spring andjummer, declare that their sales of these commodities are far less this season than in nny year during their career In busi ness. The farmers simply are not buying western corn and hay now, as in previous years. This is the best reflex of improved conditions in Sumter that has been noted. It indicates th'at the thrifty farmers of Sumter and adjoining counties have turned over a new leaf In their farming operations. The greatest corn and oat crop ever grown here in Sumter county was harvested last year. The acre age of grain crops was far greater In 1909 than any previous year in the history of the county, and the bene ficent effect of this plan of farming Is now apparent Farmers here have feedstuff suffi cient tot make a crop this year, and will not buy western corn, fray and oats, as heretofore. One large dealer here states that he has not sold a single car of corn this year, or laBt fall, whereas previous years his sales would have reached a dozen carloads by this date. Yet not a car of corn has he sold, or even ordered, in the past six months. Another dealer stated yesterday that his sales of corn and oats this year were not twenty per cent of his sales last summer. Meat Is high, 15 cents per pound wholesale, and about 18 centB retail, and farmers are buying It very spar ingly. Sumter’s farmers, as a rule, raise nearly enough pork to supply their farms, and consequently they are cutting out western meat and corn alike. This fact reflects the splendid con ditions under which fhrmlng ois be ing conducted in Sumter county this year.
