No other contest of previous years will eaqual this one, and tho winner Trill be considered fortunate indeed .a l»uc.i.ng such a prize. For weeks past the contest has been discussed with greatest interest 'throughout the city and county, and chose who have been collecting cou pons from the Times-Recorder have impatiently awaited the names of the contestants. Several have been sent in by ardent friends and supporters during the past BANQUET TO SHRINERS BEAUTIFUL AFFAIR Artistic Decorations and a Toothsome Menu. The closing feature of the pil grimage of Alee Temple to Amerlcus was the most pleasing of all. It was the banquet tendered the visitors by the local Shrlners at the armory last night. A menu of the most delicious delicacies, served in profusion, amid surroundings that were artistic In every way, made a fitting climax to a day that was without a flaw. The armory hall was decorated for the occasion In a most picturesque style, converted into a bower of beauty by the deft bands of the ladies of Amerlcus Chapter of the Order ol the Kastern Star, to whom had been consigned the duty of preparing and serving the dinner. There were four long tables, with a shorter table for tho officers and speakers the latter extending along the Forsyth street front, with the WERE CARRIED AWAY BY SUMTER’S GOOD ROADS Shrlners Had Not Expected Such Fine Highways. week; and others still will follow. Tue othcrs runnlng Bt rlght angIea from , t balloting up to last night stood as fol lows: Hiss Fannie Tarver 151 votes Miss Helen Walker 116 votes Hiss Mamie Brown 140 votes Miss Ona McAfee 126 votes Miss Jennie Harrison .,108 votes Miss Ella Mauk 143 votes With such a bevy of young ladies to lend inspiration, the voters will get hosier than ever before at any elec tion, and will even make the recent county primary look like a cheap af fair, to be sure. But there will be other entries, and interest will In crease visibly as additional names are announced. . ,i The contest is open to any lady, married or unmarried, young or "un young,” residing -In Sumter county, and the other towns besides Amerlcus will back their favorites. It would not be surprising of a full score of contestants were in the race by next Sunday morning.. Additional names may be sent the Times-Recorder at any time, together with the coupons thus voted, and due credit will be given by the Contest Editor, as the names are received. For the present the standing of the several contestants will be announced on each successive Sunday morning. There Is always room at the top— and at the bottom. The trip to be awarded the winner tty the Times-Recorder is one of the most delightful that could be arranged. It Includes a round trip to New York from Amerlcus, going by steamer from 8mvannah, with every penny of ex pense, including hotel bills and sight seeing, paid by this paper. -I- .One day will be allowed in Savan- nab, which will Include an automo bile drive over that beautiful city. ' In New York the limes-Recorder’s guest will be entertained at one of the finest hotels and every attention .shown her. An allowance of $3 per 'Bay for sight-seeing in addition to the hotel bill, will be given the fair win ner. Nothing that will be conducive to pleasure or comfort will be over looked. Surely the prospect of winning such a prize should Inspire the friends of the fair contestants to effort. Pick your winner and set busy. A wealth of flowers had been secured On the speakers’ table were masses of carnations In vases, and on the other tables roses added their beauty to the picture. The speakers’ table was further ornaniented with glass candidates holding red candles. At every plate was a red paper fez, a red japom.'ca, a Shrlners’ doylie, and the menus, tho covers of which con tained the symbols of the order, the scimeter, crescent and star embossed In white and gold, with a fez above them. The walls were almost covered with draperies of smllax, in the windows were potted flowering plants and ferns, while the platform on which Outtenberg’s orchestra was seated was banked off with great palms and ferns. In the center of the celling was a mass of smllax, with red and yellow streamers extending In all directions. Beneath was a table, on which was the great punchbowl, within a bed of violets and an artistic arrangement of the glasses about It. The entire ef fect was pretty In the extreme. When the dash of additional color that the red fezzes of the Shrlners was added It was a picture not easily to be for gotten. The menu was one that tempted the most exacting of epicures, everything prepared In the daintiest manner, and supplied In an over-abundance. It Included oyster cocktails, sliced to matoes, Spanish olives, roast turkey with cranberry sauce, broiled spring chicken hot rolls, beaten ibis- cult* French peas mixed pickles, chicken salad en mayonnaise, cheese wafers, strawberries, Ice cream, angel cake fruit coffee. One hundred and fifty sat down *.o the dinner. It was an unqualified success In every way. DEMOLAY SIR KNIGHTS ELEGT NEW OFFICERS The good roads of Sumter county were the surprise and the toast of the visitors yesterday. During the auto ride, and after it, the fine highways that have been con structed In this county during the past two years, were the subject of exceedingly favorable comment. Nothing like such roads was appar ently expected by the visitors, and when they learned that they had not gone over one-fourth of the distance that can be traveled on equally as Dno roadways, their surprise was even greater. "Chatham county started the move ment for good roads In Georgia by constructing its fine shell and gravel highways,” said Noble Theus, of Sa vannah, “and It Is a gratification to see that Sumter and other counties are catching up with It, and even threaten ing to go ahead of Chatham. These are grand highways you have here, and 1 can readily see that they must be great developing agencies for Americus end the entire country roundabout.” Other visiting Shriners -expressed themselves In similar terms. Nothing that they saw seemed to please them more than the magnificent system of Improved highways that Is stretching out In all directions from the city. The good roads of Sumter will be talked of wherever the Nobles of Alee Temple go. That Is certain. And they are certainly one of the finest adver tisements Amerlcus or Sumter county could desire. Eachf Ballot Counts SUMTER GETS A BIG BATCH OF CONVICTS. The venture that was made by he Amerlcus Hospital Asoclatton in In creasing the number of its trained nurses to four has proven an emi nently successful one thus far, and there Is every reason to believe that It will remain so. The Idea, it will be recalled, was to add two trained nurses to tho reg ular staff, these latter two to b| available for outside work, going out to serve on calis made to the hospital. Although It is probably not yet gen erally known throughout thl3 section that the nurses are available for this] purpose, there have already been sev eral calls for them, and the financial i results have been, It Is understood, in j every way satisfactory to the hos- j pital. , 1 Inasmuch as there is no hospital! nearer to Americus than Columbus,' For every new cash subscription bo the dally for one monti, and no trained nurses available at : tor 25 votes, other nearby points, It is probable that i from now on there will be frequent] ^* or ev ery new cash subscription to the daily for three montiuj SPECIAL COUPONS. If the ne cessity arises, or there are indications that the experiment is so successful as to justify the widening of Its scope, another trained nurse may be add 'd to the staff, making five In all. The accommodations at the hospital are somewhat limited, and it Is proba ble that arrangements may have to be made for sleeping quarters for some of the nurses outside of the hospital building. The news comes from Atlanta that in the distribution of the state prison ers, jthe felony convicts, twenty-seven have been awarded to Sumter as its share. This Is good news, ensuring a large gang for work on the roads during tbe coming year, as to them will be added tbe large assortment of mis demeanor convicts of tbe county. This is as many state convicts as the county had working for lt the greater part of last year. Sumter gets more state convicts than any other county In this sec tion, except It be Muscogee. In fact, there are probably only two counties In all South Georgia that receive more, Chatham and Muscogee. Dougherty only gets fourteen. The total number distributed among the counties Is 1,1)91 THROAT MISERY. THIS WOULD MAKE A VERY STRONG TICKET. Three Who May Represent Sumter Next Time. For Senator: J. E. SHEPPARD. For Representatives: CRAWFORD WHEATLEY, E. A. NESBIT.. This Is a ticket that Is being freely discussed as a probable winner in tbe approaching legislative primary. None of the gentlemen In question has as yet announced himself as posi tively a candidate. But their friends are chafing at the bit and are eager for the words to be spoken so they can begin active campaign In their Interest. Such a delegation would be one of tbe strongest in the legislature. No one questions that. It would bring Sumter county right up to the front of the procession and keep lt there. The personal popularity of the three men mentioned would seem to ensure their being victorious at the polls, their hosts of friends say. Indeed, there are many who do not hesitate to express tbe belief that If these three will permit of their names be ing used there will be no opposition Knights Templar of Ameri cus. in Meeting. I had chronic laryngitis; in fact effected a cure after all the best specialists had given me up as a bad job.. I tried Hyomel, the same as I had tried hundred s of other things that people or doctors would recommend. They all fadile except Hyomel, and this effected a cure that has been lasting. All my troubles happened 12 years ago and I bad ought to be ashamed not to have written you belore. At first I waited to see If the cure was permanent or not, and when you realize that for five winters before I used Hyomel that I could not speak above a whis per and sometimes not at all, you can judge why I waited with a good deal of anxiety for a time to see lt I was really cured or not.”—E. It Is believed that' If such a building were erected hero ] 6t would result in a nuihber of Ill per- sons being brought here for treatment, I that parties requiring surgical opera tions would come here from a consid- j erable extent of country roundabout,' and that In every way such an In vestment would prove of value to Amerlcus. While the plan Is yet in' embryo, lt Is recognized that the grow- ( lng needs of the city and the country for fifty miles around justify the hope that such a building can be erected In the next year or two.
