Chicago, April 2.—The minister who
forsakes sensationalism for theology
has no place In the pulpit today, ac
cording to Prof. William G. Sumner,
of Yale University. Hls views are set
forth In the “American Journal of
Sociology.”
“People don’t care wtnt the Bible
says any more, as the morality ot this
<ook was written for the ancient days,’
Is another assertion of Prof. Sumner.
He insists that the morality ot the
Bible does not fit In well with that of
this day.
“Nohtdy has ever done what the
Bible says," says Prof, Sumner. "What
men always have done, If they tried to
do right, was to conform to the morals
of the group and the time.”
On 'the subject of sensationalist^ In
the pulpit, Prof. Sumner says:
“The pulpit as an institution n?
longer speaks with authority. It tries
to persuade, and to do this It Das to
aim at popularity. It wants to attract
attention like books, theaters, the lec
ture platform, and It has to have re
course, like them, to sensational
methods to win success.”

Butler. Pa.. April 4.—Records yellow
with a century's age wore unearthed
In the offleo of Clerk of Courts Robert
M. McFarland which show that a high-
coa'.-of-livlng crusade was In progress
as early as 1804. ,
A document filed wltb Judge Moor
In that yesr Is signed by 100 cltisens,
petitioning the court to “set a stipu
lated price on provisions for man and
horse and on liquors In the taverns of
the county.”
The petitioners prayed for red re is
and asserted: “It is the consensus of
opinion that 25 cents for a meal of
victuals and 1$ cents for a halt-pint of
whisky'ts an extortion, as whisky has
been purchased for 40 cents a gallon
pork from 3 to 4 cents a pound end
flour for $2 per hundredweight"
Tbs records give so evidence as to
whether the prayer which was led by
Michael Martin, was ever answered, ,

Neat suits ot blue, with class letters

worst behaved men are to be punished
