WILL BEGIN ON FRIDAY *
THE COUNT IN SUMTER
i In Americus, on Friday morning
next, as throughout the country, be
aue counters will proceed to get
tawy In censns taking, and the twelve
iiKe enumerators appointed for this
city and Sumter county will sally forth
with pencils poised and pads In hand
to do their duty.
As stated already, four enumerators
will do the work In Americus, and
eight In the county outside, Including
the smaller '.owns.
With Jackson street, north and
south, as the dividing line, Mr. J. R.
Britton will count the white residents
of the west side of town. North or
Church and east of Jackson, Judge
Mott will preside. Mrs. Paftterson
will have the Fourth ward, east of
Jackson and south of Church.
The colored enumerators for the3e
wards, who will count the colorod
population only, have already been
mentioned.
Thus begins the taking of the thir
teenth national census.
Uncle Sam estimates that he has a
family of 90,000,000 men, women and
children, and he already has employ

body of enumerators considerably
larger than the standing army.
The law provides that the enumer

It Is not so peremptory about the
commencing as the closing time, end
intimations have been received that
In Instances the work may be post
poned until Saturday. This Is due to
thie fact that the 16th falls on Fri
day, and among the 70,000 name tak

tious as to this day.
The enumeration will cover all of
the forty-five states and two territo
ries of the union proper and
wall and Porto Rico. Alaska, the r

Under Use statutes governing
work, the entire enumeration
completed within a month, and 13 ]
cities within fifteen days.
