CORDELE WANTS SLICE
OF AMERIGUS TRADE.
Cordelo wants to steal some ot the
trade that Americas gets from Sumter
county. Cordelo Is pushing Its busi-
i In various ways and It now casts
i covetous eye across the Flint river
to the broad and fertile regions oi.
Sumter county. It thinks it may man-'
uerer In such a way as to divert the|
business of a portion of the county
from Americus to Itself.
The plan that has been worked up
In Cordele Is to havetbe county com
missioners ot Crisp county throw a
bridge across the Flint river Into
Sumter county and construct a good
highway from the .bridge to Cor
dele. The claim Is made that the far
mers ot a large section ot Sumter
county hare to come twenty miles or
more to Americus, while If the Crisp
Idea is carried out they would have
to travel ten miles or so to Cordele
to do their marketing.
The county commissioners ot Crisp
now have the matter under consider
ation and propose to look Into the
expense of building the bridge and
constructing the road. Inasmuch as
there Is a considerable stretch of
swamp land to be crossed after the
river Is bridged on both sides, It Is
quite likely that the Crisp county peo
ple will find that the cost Is a pro
hibitive one. They could hardly ask
6umter county to assist In building
the bridge and the approaches
this side of the river In order to take
business away from Sumter county
towns.
Americus now has good roads
reaching almost to the edge of tho
Flint river and during the present
year or next will be further connected
with the territory that Cordele de
sires to annex. With One thirty-foot
highways running from Amen
that region It Is hardly ■
Cordele, even If It gets
commissioners to build theb
