Amerlcus saw the snowflakes yes
terday mowing, the first Aprllic ap
pearance of “the beautiful” ever wit-
here, even by the oldest ln-
nt Down to 40 tbs mercury
tumbled, and Amerlcus, In the habili
ments of summer, shook and shover-
ed as In January.
At 8 o'clock yesterday morning the
temperature dropped to 40, the low
est point touched, according to the
weather bureau here, though other
thermometers less accurate, perhaps,
showed a score of 36.
Thin flakes of snow, real, beautiful
scow, fell here at 11 o’cldfck, to the
amazement of the shirt-walsted and
straw-hatted natives.
Telegrams from Atlanta during the
day reported a temperature of 31 de
grees, the lowest April record ever
made. ' Snow fell In Atlanta aa inch
deep on the level, while snowfall was
likewise reported, at Macon, Cj’.um*
bus and as far east as Fort Valley.
And even in Amerlcns—in the trop
ica! heart of Georgia, looked upon thd
snowflakes.
Overcoats, hundreds of overcoats,
were dug out of the camphor gum de
positories and again flashed in pub
lic, while fires glowed tn every home.
Amerlcus was literally In winter quar
ters.
Greatest fear Is felt for the safety

already as to necessitate the entire
replanting ot the crop. The weather

of the corn crop, fruit and vegetable
crops.
