THE AMERICUS WEEKLY TIMES-RECORDER. THURSDAY. MAY 12, 1910,
SIXtt MILES OF ROADS
SEEN IN TWO HOURS.
State Geologist McGallie a
Visitor Here.
Pleased With the Roads
and Prosperity Seen
on Every Hand.
lion. S. AV. McCallie, chief of the
state bureau of geology, was a prom
inent visitor in Ainertcui Monday
coining here especially to examine tire
good roads of Sumter county, the ma
terial used In their construction and
other points of interest to be embod
ied in a publication soon to be issued.
And what he saw here pleased him
beyond expectation.
Forty miles of completed roadway
was shown Prof. McCallie in a little
run of two hours, while he was also
offered the opportunity of seeing the
convicts engaged in road construction.
Commissioner of Agriculture T. G
Hudson essayed the role of ho3t gen
ial, and with his handsome touring
car accompanied Prof. McCallie in a
trip which took the party over a wide
scope of Sumter extending from tho
western to the southern and eastern
boundaries.
Near Pleasant Grove church the
party was shown the method of actual
road building by Supt. Christian. Tne
road from that point to Huntington l«
being converted iiuo a line highway,
and Prof. McCallie was interested in
the method of road building, with the
over evident view to permanency.
A demonstration of the split-log
drag, thy simple, but effective imple
ment tired to level and resurface tho
roads after a heavy rain, likewise In
terest! d tho visitors,
i From this point, nine miles east of
Ameri-us, the party speeded over to
Plains, nineteen miles away, conclud
ing the tour of Inspection with a spin
down the Smlthvllle road in order
that Prof. McCallie might see'not on
ly the fine roads but the farms and
big orchards in that part of Sumte'.
The fine farms, the splendid crops
and the big peach orchards, together
with the magnificent roads, created ,t
most favorable impression.
Thoroughly capable of appreciating
such Improvements as were shown
him, and contrasting Sumter's roads
with those in other portions of Geor
gia and the South, Prof. McCallie
spoke In highest praise of the work
already done here and expressed the
Ittpe that Sumter would continue the
Igood work.
I Numerous photographs of .fine
Stretches of roadway were made by
Prof. McCallie to be used in Issuing
Aibe publication he is preparing.

more work and with less power. All Continental machinery is built from
material best suited for the purposes intended, and reduces breakages to a
minimum. That removes big repair bills and avoids loss of time. With the
Muneer System outfit a ginner can give growers the best sample in hi3 com

BIG FISH-FRY AT BELL'S
IN ENJOYED BY HOST.
Six Hundred Pounds Fish
on Dinner lable.
Americua people who attended the
monster flah fry and picnic at Bell's
Mill, near Preston, on Thursday, dined
at a table where six hundred pounds
of beautiful trout, bream and perch
constituted the piece de resistance,
with chicken p'e as a chaser. This
old mill is one of the famous fishing
resorts of this section and the fish
are so plentiful there that they fre
quently flop out on the banks of the
pond and greedily attack the fisher
man's bait gourd. At tho picnic there
Thursday the fish hit finely, and when
the alarm was sounded -for dinner
nearly six hundred pounds had been
caught 'and cooked. Five hundred
people dined there, and when all had
thus partaken twelve t baskets full—
of bones—const tuted the appetizing
wreck upon the snowy cloth.

BELL STRUCK BY BOLT
AND HOUSE IS BURNED
Bolt Hit Bell on I. P. Gocke
Farm.
Parties from Leesburg coming to
Americus Monday told of the de
struction wrought by lightning on the
farm of Col. I. P. Cocke during the
rainstorm Sunday afternoon. At the
end of the verandah of the residence
occupied by Col. Cocke's overseer
there has hung a large bell, used to
summon the farm laborers to work.
The bolt struck the bell, melting it
[emtirely and communicating the
flames to the dwelling. The occu
pants were all away at church and the
building, with all contents of furni
ture, were destroyed. Not a vestige
of the farm bell remained, beyond a
lump of molten metal.

Miss Georgia Hair Will Wed Mr. C.
D. Elmore.
Dr. and Mrs. W. R. Hair, of Buena
Vista, announce the engagement >f
their daughter, Georgia, to Mr. C. B.
Elmo: o, of Columbus, the wedding 'o
take place early in June. The charm
ing bride-elect Is a petite brunette
with a cordial grace of manner and a
winsome personality that has made
for her a host of friends in Americus,
where she has several times been an
admired and popular guest of Mrs
W. P. Wallis. The groom Is also well
and favorably known here, having at
one time held a responsible position
with the Southern Express Company
at this point.
Think of It 1 After six years of sour
stomach, of gas eructations, of nerv
ousness, during which' time every
meal lay on his stomach like a lump of
legd, a man was restored to perfect
health by Mi-o-na stomach tablets.
“I suffered misery and intense pains
from stomach trouble for over six
years, and all the doctoring that I did
or medicines I used were of no avail
until about two years ago, when 1 I
used a treatment of Mi-o-na. The first
few days' treatment helped me greatly
and upon using it a while I was made
entirely free from any stomach* trouble
or complain' whatever. Since the cure
by Mi-p-.na I have regained my weight,
I eat and sleep well, am never nervous
and my entire general health is much
better.".—Max M. Hoffman, Webster,
N. Y., Aug, 2, 1909.
Ml-o-na relieves stomach distress in
five minutes it acts like magic. It is
guaranteed to cure sour stomach, gas
er etatiens, heartburn, dizziness, bil
iousness and nervousness, or money
hack. For sale by druggists every
where and In Americus by Dodson's
Pharmacy for 50 cents a large box.
Oliver Place, Near Plains,
Brings Price.
Twenty-five thousand dollars was
the round price paid yesterday for
the R. L. Oliver farm of 667 acres
lying" in Sumter county, ten miles
west of Americus and south' of Plains.
The purchaser Is Mr. T. M. Lowery,
mayor of Seneca, S. C., find a promi
nent citizen of that state.
Mr. Lowery has spent several days
here looking ove' the fine farm land3
of Sumter, and Is delighted with this
section.
In fact, so well pleased Is he that
he announces his intention of remov
ing shortly to Sumter county and re-
s'ding ' here permanently upon the
beautiful farm Just acquired at the
price of $25,000.
Tbe sale of-this fine property was
made through Mr. Frank J. Payne,
real estate agent here, who also sold
to Mr. B. T. Neaves of Greenville, S.
C, a farm of 750 acres in Do-gherty
county situated within three miles of
Albany. This farm of 750 acres stfld
for only $30,000.
Sumter’s good roads enhance tho
value of farm lands here. Newcom
ers say as much, and comparison of
prices proves It.
Farm lands In Sumter, twelve miles
from Americus, sell readily for $35
to $10 per acre, while thousands of
acres highly Improved lands would
readily soil for $50 per acre, or even
more, If offered for sale. Many such
farms arc not to be hid here even
at such pricey.
The magnificent roads traversing
Sumter county in every direction have
thus enhanced values and resulted ii
the sale recently of farms aggregat
ing In value more than a half million
dollars.
