South Carolinian is Pleased With Prospect. Among the visitors In Amerlcus on Friday aws Col. E. W. Kbaugh, a wealthy South Carolinian and large land owner in Sumter, who came to tako a look at Ms broad acre* below Amerlcus, now verdant with beautiful crops of corn and cotton. On bis farm of 3,500 acres near Oobb Station, on the Seaboard, Col. Ebaugh has nearly one thousand acres In cotton which promises well at thl* early stage. Thl* large crop waa not damaged to any extent by the cold snap two week* ago, and Col. Ebaugh think* that less than a half dozen acres will re quire replanting. HI* crops of corn, oats and other cereal* are fino well. He Is likewise Interested In fine peach o'ceard near Americas, and the prospect there Is roseate as well. Th« trie* are laden with fruit and the yield will be 'mmenae. Col Ebaugh went back to h's home yesterday, but will return to Amerlcus with hls fam ily early In June for a stay of sev eral week on hls plantation. Everybody in Sumtor county, out side of the incorporated city limits, who is over s xteen years of age and under fifty, is subject to road duty —or to the commutation tax for fail ure to work the roads. This will be news to those who are between the ages of 16 and 21 years. Heretofore only thoso between the ages of 21 and 50 have been call J upon to pay the road -tax of $1 or give tie, service. This, It appears, has*been entirely an error, an unintentional error o.i the part of the county commission ers in past years, growing out of the fact that they v.ere not properly post ed on the state law. They know now that the ago Hints are 16 and' 50 years and everyone coming within such conditions will b8 required from now on to comply with the terms of the law. While in Atlanta the county attot ney took the opportunity to discuss the matter with Attorney General John C. Hart The attorney general Informed bint that there was no question that every male citizen between 16 and 50 years of age Is liable to road duty or tbo commutation tax. The attorney gen eral directed attention to two decis ions of the Supreme Court of Ooorgia that clearly covered tbe point and settled that these were the age lim itations. Comr.y Attorney Maynard on hls re turn to the city informed the cotnmls- mlssloners and It Is now their duty to see to It that every male over 16 and under 50 meets this obligation. It is not known how many addi tions this will make to the list of those subject to tbe tax. As there is a large negro population In the county, it is probable that there are several hun dred of them between 16 and 21 years who have heretofore escaped, who will now be called on for the work or the money. A smaller numbor of young white men will also bo summon ed. ’ From now on the law will be rig idly enforced. As but few prefer road duty to paying the fax, the county treasury will be enriched several dol lars thereby.
