HIE ROADS OF SUMTER
Atlanta Paper Has Edito
rial Comment.
Sumter county’s really magnificent
i tare been tbs subject of many
ringing editorials In the Atlanta Con
stitution' and others of Georgia’s big
dallies that stand for progress and
the enhancement of land values by the
building of good roads. Sumter coun
ty Is in the limelight
Sumter county leads all Georgia—
barring no other county—on the good
roads proposition.
A news story published recently In
the Tlmes-Recorder Is taken by the
Constitution for edltonlal commend.
This was published yesterday in doa
ble column form and in capital let
ters, as follows:
“Down in Sumter county there Is
farmer richer by $3,000 because of a
specific good roads movement the he
couldn’t see his way clear to old. ' • /■
"If that Is not argument and conver
sion in one breath, we would not
know where to turn for either.
"This particular farmer, as report
ed by our correspondent at Amerlcus,
has always been skeptical concerning
the value of good roads or the divi
dends from road Improvement
"He has persistently been endeav
oring to dispose of his 800 acres at
ISO. But highway facilities were lack
ing, and there we e no purchasers.
"A short time ago a roadway was
projected which should pass by his
place and link it to civilisation.
"Farmers contlglous, realising the
immense value of the improvement
gave freely of their land for the right-
of-way.
"So Joined was this man to his
Idols that he refused to cede even a
small strip of that land be
to sell and couldn’t
•The road building proceed* 4
less of bis declination.
"A few days after It was
he was offered $40 an tet^
entire tract which, P r *
could not sell at $30.
