He gave out the following statement this afternoon at 1 o'clock: "During the past two weeks I have received requests in various forms all urging me to enter the race for gov ernor. and convincing me that an ex tended movement had begun to cause my candidacy for that office. “Millie I deeply appreciate the pur pose of those engaged In this move ment, I cannot see my way clear at this time to become a candidate and I -.vk h to spare them useless trouble. "But for the conviction that certain legislation then in the public mind ms absolvtely necessary, 1 wculd nit have emend the first race The see. mid, race Avar precipitated before 1 had been in office nine months and 1 ■entered 'l from a sense ot duty. “Before the close ot my two years as governor the important measures for which the -contest of 1906 was made had been accomplished, and the principals embodied in that will main the policy sf the state. "If my individual preference alone s were Involved 1 would yield the mall without hesitation, and comply with any call usule upon me by that splen did body of mon who stood together so loyally in 19W and again in 1907 for the reforms in question, and who went down with ne in the last elec tion, before the forces of opposition which I do not believe can again be combined. "But there are other reasons of a personal nature which prevent my en tering a heated political contest at the present tr'me. While I cannot now consent to enter the race for governor 1 wish to assure my friends hod fellow cltlzons of the regret it causes me not to comply with their wishes, and of my readiness, out of office, to serve them in any way possible. I shall he ready .at all times to take part in the Bupiiort of measures which wfU pro mote good government whenever and wherever the opportunity Is gives.” PAfFERsON IS GAME IN (IIS 1RIP 10 GALLOWS Neck Broken In Plunge to Death. a Man Wants to Die only when a lazy liver and sluggl.h bowels cause frightful despondency. FOUR MORE CAROLINIANS LOOKING FOR FARMS. Spent Yesterday Going Over Sunter County. Another party of South Caroliuiaus spent yesterday here, looking over the farm lands of Sumter county with view to investing in them, either for the purpose of making a home on the broad and fruitful acres they con template purchasing, or with the view of securing handsome returns from the money placed in Georgia dirt hereabouts. In tbo party were Messrs. J. B. .light, of Pelzer, W. M. Knight, of Laurens, J. T. Arnold, of Greenville, and J. W. Hooper, of Seneca. Mr. Negro Murderer Hanged For Crime Committed Near Americus, With steady step, and loudly sing ing his favorite tymn, Henry Patter son, alone and unassisted, ascended the gallows through which his body shot to death ten minutes later for the crime he commuted here Just one year ago, the murder of Captain W. F. McRae. There wa3 not a quiver or expres sion ' of fear, and in a few minutes the legal tragedy was ended and the majesty of the law upheld. Patterson was banged at 11:31 o’clock. His neck was broken by the fall and death, therefore, instantan eous. The jail officials, physicians, two colored ministers and a few guarJs assisting witnessed the execution. Patterson's brother stood at the foot of the gallows and witnessed the sad tragedy. For nearly an hour before he was executed the condemned negro talk ed with his spl-itual advisers, and to Us brother gave minute directions as to the funeral. His great desire seemed to be that- his body be en cased in a fine coffin, and of this he was assured. Patterson said nothing of the mur der he committed, only that be still clung to the statement' previously made in his trial. He asked that the cloth be removed from his blind eyes a~:r his death and replaoed with his epectacles. His photograph was taken on the gallows steps. HU daughter was admitted to bid him farewell as he eat upon the steps of the gallows, hut the woman was frightened into spasms liy ’ the scene end ran shrieking into the streets. 1 There was no motion of the body after the trap was sprung and the fearful ordeal soon ended. As Patter son walked up the steps others the noose dangled he sang loudly, all the other prisoners in the cages beneath taking up the refrain and singing in chorus. After the physicians pronounced Mm dead the body was cut down and will be burled today. The crime for which Patterson died yesterday was the brutal murder or Captain XV. F. McRae, superintendent of the Bagley-Ray Orchard Co., here, in June last. The dead body of CapL .McRae was discovered next morning fn the peach or shard about fifty yards from Patterson's bouse. The lower court and Supreme alike passed upon his case, and the governor and prison commission sus tained the verdict. W. S. & G. W.
