It seems like a many times told
story. bel It is a story that will bear
almost tcaaeless repetition, especially
when every time it is a story with a
aew phase and a promise of even bet
ter things for Sumter county just
ahead.
Yesterday Mr. P. J. Payne, the real
estate agent, received a letter from his
■brother, Mr. J. G. Payne, who for the
past few weeks h'as been enga
personal work among the farmers of
a large section of South Carolina, put
ting solid facts about Americus and
Snnitcr county before them, and also
(seeking to interest men of means
in the opportunities hereabouts for
profitable investments.
In this work he has been very suc
cessful. In his letter yesterday, writ
ten from Greenville, the old home of
the Messrs. Payne, he stated that the
cntlook was good for a trip of a num
ber of those he had been dealng with 1 ,
probably late this month, to Americus,
for the purpose of personally studying
the situation. Included In those who
are expected to come are a bank pres
ident, some other men of affairs, and
some progressive farmers
"It has not been difficult to awaken
Interest in Sumter county,” wrote Mr.
Payne, "as the reputation of the coun
ty is already widely known and people
are eager to hear more about the sec
tion round about Americus."
Mr. Payne expressed the belief that
Hlfi> seed thai had been sown In
South Carolina would bring forth a
big cropof arrivals this summer, with
investments .in lands, and a number r
actual settlers as soon as the crops
are laid by and lands disposed of

Mr. Payne wil continue his work

Tomorrow Mr. J. C. Britton, who has
been in charge of tile preparation of
the soil map of Sumter county, leaves
for Marion county, Missouri, his next
field of labor. His assistant in the
work Be re, Mr. F. S. Welch, has gone
tot Pennsylvania.
The final touches were pat yester
day to the soil map of Sumter county
and the data that is to accompany it
in a pamphlet and a bulky package
carried to Washington, the results of
tine six months labor of the two soil
experts. Messrs. Britton and Welch
