Davenport Americus, like many other Georgia cities, pos sesses one or more residents rapidly approaching tbe century mark In years aud who remember distinctly tbe ap pearance of this great comet now ex citing worldwide Interest upon its last appearance In 1833. That was seventy-five years ago, three-fourths of a century, but Col Walter T. Davenport, of Americus, j now In his ninety-third year, saw tho huge comet then. A young man of near IS years, Col. Davenport was then residing In Vir ginia, the state of his nativity, though the greater portion of his long and useful career has been spent here in Americus. Despite the eight of years. Col. Davenport has been an Interested star gazer since tbe Halley comet has been visible in the western sky for three days, and to his friends he tells of tho appearance of the huge tramp ci the skies 75 years ago when he viewed It from tbe hills of Virginia. •Mr. A. A. Wlllct is another aged citizen of Americus who saw tin comet at that time, and who, at 9i or 95 years, is still hale, hearty and vigorous. Slightly disfigured, but still In tha going, Hailey's comet continues on its merry way, undisturbed over tho fact that It has lost Its tall. Just how the comet lost Its tall ha3 not yet been determined by tbe men who have kept watch on It for weeks. It may have been caused by a disso lution of partnership or a lack of proper transportation facilities. With clear skies the comet should he visible until the latter part of May, until It will gradually become dimmer and dimmer and It will take the most powerful of glasses to distinguish it. When seen last night It was shining with about half the brilliancy of an ordinary star, but It is thought this will increase In a day or two. While scientist* differ a« to the cause of tbe loss of part of Its rodder they are agreed that tbe comet I* go ing on In the even ten or of IU way.
