A Methivin, state pure food inspector, of the excellent progress which has been made in improving the grade of food products sold in the state under the pure food and drugs act passed by the legislature Ihst year. Inspector Metlrvin shows that be has carefully inspected the food and feed ?ng stuffs placed on sale in this state and while numerous violations of the law have been detected, a word to the 'manufacturer or the producer lias proven effective In most cases and the ' grade of the articles offered for sale has been made to conform to the pry vision of the law. State Drug Inspector T. A. Cheatham also submits an interesting report showing that rigid enforcements of the • drug law ha3 practically removed from the market in thfs state all drugs which do not conform with thfe law. Dr. R. E. Stallings, state chemist shows that with the passage of the pure food “and drugs act the work of his department ha3 increased enor mously and he urges that some pro- " vision be made for increasing the force of employes. I, Worsham covers a .vide range for the year, and in spite of the constantly increasing demand . for inspections of orchards, growing - crops and shade and ornamental trees on private estates, tbe work has be'en lone thoroughly and well. Great progress has geen made in stamping ' out the Sau Jose scale, the "“black root” or wilt disease of cotton, and diseases of fruit and crops. The quarterly session of the City court, with Judge Crisp presiding, op ened yesterday, but by conseut all civil business was passed for the week, and the session adjourned until Saturday morning next for ti.ie appearance docket. Judge Arnold, of Monroe, hooked the monster, which made an attempt to ram the boat and .was on ly prevented by the united efforts of ■he crew.
