The Third congressional district Is .Almost purely an agricultural dis trict. In Its fifteen counties there are &nt two cities, Amerlcus with 10,009, ,*atl Cordele, with probably 6.000 pop- „UaUon. Hoke Smith carried Sumter ■county and carried Amerlcus. It was .claimed by tho Smith leaders, after rlhe election, that the Brown strength .came from the cities. It certainly did vaot 1 nthe Third congressional district .In ita fifteen counties Brown got the .'bulk of the 1 country vote. Gaynor, of New York, was shot In the neck and badly wounded this morning by James J- Ga.laghei, a discharged employe of the city dock department. The sbcotlng took place on the deck of the steamer Wilhelm der Gross-; With 830 names of Sumter'a citir“ , ‘g placed In the jury box. the Jury com mission have completed the task as signed and adjourned. The commis sion was thus employed tbe greate- part of the past week and went care fully over the lists presented them. Of the number selected 649 are traverse jurors, and 181 grand Jurors, making a totai of 830 names of eligtbles thus presented. This work ot revising the Jury lists Is done every two years, anl is very thorough and complete. The commissioners who thus served re cently were Messrs. George Oliver, J L. Johnson, W. R. Battle, D.
