The practical effects of the gord
roads of Sumter county are not miss
ing these d iys, since cotton has be
gun to move to market and tide high
ways of the county are the avenues
for the crop's transportation. Day
after day finds large''loads moving
along smoothly over roads that two
or three years ago wdre difficult to
traverse with one-quarter the weight
of the staple that is now hauled with
out trouble, and in muck' less time
than heretofore.
Yesterday a dapper pair of mules,
clean of limb, but spare of bulk, frisk
ed over the four miles that separate
the plantation of Mr. Walter Howard
from the Council warehouse on Fov-
syt'i street. In addition to the weigh',
of the heavy wagon eight gjeat bales
of cotton were piled up behind them.
A: riving at tie Council warehouse the
mnVs simwaj no signs of weariness
nr.d could have gone on just as easily
for a number of ml.'es more and suf
fered no physical Inconvenience.
When weighed, (he eight bales ag
gregated 3,SOD pounds. With the add
ed weight of tide wagon and driver, the
total h3ul was in the neighborhood "of
1 590 pounds, or two and a quarter
tons.
This is f :e kind of easy hauling that
nr.ites farming In Sumter county prof-
tahie.
Mr. Howard la one of the progres
sive type- of farmers who are pueh'ng
Sumter steadily to tide front in their
line. He owns the old Bird place and
every season seps Its condition im
proved and its value increased. Ilia
er:>:> this y-ar is among th'- finest to
be seen in all the county.
